The Department <strong>of</strong> Microbiology <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> following<br />
graduate programmes<br />
MSc <strong>Medical</strong> Microbiology<br />
MPhil/PhD <strong>Medical</strong> Microbiology (by research)<br />
DM <strong>Medical</strong> Microbiology<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Science in <strong>Medical</strong> Microbiology<br />
Aims and Objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme<br />
Provide graduates with a systematic understanding<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientific basis <strong>of</strong> microbiological concepts.<br />
Produce graduates who are equipped with <strong>the</strong><br />
knowledge, analytical and practical skills to permit<br />
<strong>the</strong>m to<br />
pursue careers in <strong>the</strong> microbiology in hospital, diagnostic<br />
laboratory or research settings.<br />
Prepare graduates for terminal degree training in<br />
medical microbiology (MD, DM, PhD, DPhil.<br />
Entry Requirements<br />
MSc<br />
Candidates for <strong>the</strong> MSc Microbiology must hold a<br />
degree in medicine or at least an Upper Secondclass<br />
Honours degree <strong>of</strong> a recognised university in<br />
science or medicine. Candidates with an appropriate<br />
technical qualification and work experience, or<br />
equivalent qualifications, will also be considered<br />
for admission to <strong>the</strong> course following an interview<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Specialty Board. Graduates in a science<br />
not specializing in General Microbiology or <strong>Medical</strong><br />
Microbiology will be required to complete a qualifying<br />
year and examination before admission to <strong>the</strong><br />
programme. Candidates who hold <strong>the</strong> MBBS and<br />
BBMedSci <strong>of</strong> this <strong>University</strong> or those who have similar<br />
qualifications may apply for exemption from <strong>the</strong><br />
qualifying examination by presenting details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
courses and examination results.<br />
Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy<br />
Candidates intending to study for <strong>the</strong> PhD degree<br />
must hold an appropriate Masters Degree in <strong>Medical</strong><br />
Microbiology. All o<strong>the</strong>r candidates must first register<br />
for <strong>the</strong> MPhil but may transfer <strong>the</strong>ir registration after<br />
at least one year <strong>of</strong> study based on <strong>the</strong> recommendation<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supervisory committee and:<br />
(a) Submission <strong>of</strong> a research proposal <strong>of</strong> a standard<br />
suitable for a terminal research degree<br />
(b) Presentation and defence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir research proposal<br />
before an assessment committee<br />
(c) Independent assessment by <strong>the</strong> department<br />
The award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree is based on presentation <strong>of</strong><br />
a <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> original research which significantly advances<br />
<strong>the</strong> discipline <strong>of</strong> microbiology.<br />
