PUBH 6404 (HE64D) Health Economics (2 credits)<br />
Introduces <strong>the</strong> key concepts, methods, applications<br />
and issues in health economics. Emphasis is on <strong>the</strong><br />
use and application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tools and techniques <strong>of</strong><br />
health economics to planning, policy-making implementation<br />
and evaluation <strong>of</strong> programmes in <strong>the</strong><br />
health sector.<br />
PUBH 6501 (HE65A) Primary Health Care<br />
(2 credits)<br />
Reviews and discusses Alma Ata, from a health<br />
sector perspective. Examines <strong>the</strong> contribution <strong>of</strong><br />
non-health sectors, health service structure and<br />
functions, community participation, intersectoral coordination,<br />
international health regulations, natural<br />
and international health agencies to primary health<br />
care. Analyses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> primary health care approach<br />
to <strong>the</strong> promotion and maintenance <strong>of</strong> health and development<br />
are included.<br />
PUBH 6601 (HE66A) Environmental Health<br />
(2 credits)<br />
Provides a general overview <strong>of</strong> environmental health,<br />
its scope and practice. Emphasis is placed on <strong>the</strong><br />
interrelationship between man and his environment<br />
and <strong>the</strong> resulting impact on health. The vast dimensions<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment including air, land and water<br />
and related issues including physical, biological<br />
and chemical agents known to be harmful to health<br />
are included.<br />
PUBH 6701 (HE67A) Community Mental Health<br />
(2 credits)<br />
This course covers <strong>the</strong> concepts and principles related<br />
to mental health, <strong>the</strong> organization and delivery<br />
<strong>of</strong> relevant services and <strong>the</strong> principles underlying<br />
choice <strong>of</strong> service models in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean. The emphasis/philosophy<br />
in this course is on seeing Community<br />
Mental Health as an integrated component <strong>of</strong><br />
public health services.<br />
PUBH 6602 (HE68A) Disaster Management<br />
(2 credits)<br />
Highlights <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> disaster management<br />
and its relevance to public health in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean.<br />
The course describes <strong>the</strong> essential elements for<br />
consideration in disaster management and mitigation.<br />
The challenges and approaches inherent in<br />
pre-disaster, intra-disaster and post-disaster phases<br />
and <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public health team in all phases<br />
are discussed. The course also includes site visits<br />
