DESCRIPTION OF COURSES/MODULES<br />

PUBH 6001 (HE60A) Research Methodology<br />

(2 credits)<br />

Covers principles involved in <strong>the</strong> writing <strong>of</strong> a research<br />

proposal, design <strong>of</strong> investigations, methods <strong>of</strong> data<br />

collection and report writing. This is followed by an<br />

application <strong>of</strong> principles in planning and conducting<br />

a research project that is examined externally as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examination process. Research projects<br />

<strong>of</strong> students in <strong>the</strong> Health Education and Health Promotion<br />

track must have a Health Promotion slant<br />

and include qualitative methods.<br />

PUBH 6002 (HE60B) Project Report (6 credits)<br />

All students are expected to apply <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong><br />

biostatistics, epidemiology and research methods<br />

in planning and conducting research on a topic <strong>of</strong><br />

public health relevance. Both qualitative and quantitative<br />

measures are expected in this research. Re-<br />

search projects <strong>of</strong> students in <strong>the</strong> Health Education<br />

and Health Promotion track must in addition to <strong>the</strong><br />

foregoing, have a Health Promotion slant.<br />

PUBH 6201 (HE61A) Biostatistics (2 credits)<br />

This course introduces students to <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> statistics<br />

and its application in public health. It will cover<br />

data analysis using descriptive, inferential and hypo<strong>the</strong>sis-testing<br />

techniques. The use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> computer<br />

in data analysis will be an important feature <strong>of</strong><br />

this course.<br />

PUBH 6201 (HE62A) Epidemiology I (2 credits)<br />

Introduces methods <strong>of</strong> epidemiology with special<br />

reference to disease entities and conditions found<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean. Principles, uses and methods<br />

<strong>of</strong> epidemiology; host-agent-environment relationships,<br />

measures <strong>of</strong> disease frequency, investigation<br />

<strong>of</strong> outbreaks, disease surveillance, aspects <strong>of</strong> community<br />

health analysis, rates and ratios, introductory<br />
