CLINICAL NUTRITION (TU61B)<br />

1. Under-nutrition<br />

Malnutrition-classification and clinical features, treatment,<br />

stunting and wasting, Kwashiorkor -aetiology,<br />

associated factors; infection, immunity, diarrhoea,<br />

parasites, mental development, social background,<br />

long term effects and implications. Anaemia. Anorexia<br />

and starvation.<br />

2. Chronic non-communicable diseases<br />

Aetiology, risk factors, management and epidemiology<br />

<strong>of</strong> obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes,<br />

hypertension. Diet and cancer. HIV/AIDS and nutrition.<br />

3. Altered nutritional requirements in relevant disease<br />

states, unusual requirements.<br />

4. Assessment <strong>of</strong> Clinical and Functional Metabolic<br />

State<br />

Clinical skills, history taking, recognizing physical<br />

signs, diagnosis <strong>of</strong> primary and secondary nutritional<br />

diseases.<br />

5. Therapy and Management<br />

Acute and chronic illnesses, rehabilitation, institu-<br />

tional and community care, palliation, artificial feeding.<br />

Application <strong>of</strong> appropriate management skills<br />

for investigations, nutritional advice and treatment,<br />

referrals, institutional care and community care.<br />

General principles <strong>of</strong> nutritional support, routes <strong>of</strong><br />

support<br />

6. Drug nutrient interactions.<br />

OTHER ACTIVITIES<br />

Introduction to word processing and presentations<br />

Ward rounds on <strong>the</strong> ward for malnourished children<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Tropical Metabolism Research Unit<br />

Discussion <strong>of</strong> research being carried out by staff<br />

Research seminars given by staff and invited guests<br />

weekly during <strong>the</strong> semester.<br />

RESEARCH PROJECT (TU680)<br />

Investigation and written report <strong>of</strong> an approved topic.<br />

The research proposal and introduction should be<br />

completed during <strong>the</strong> second semester and presented<br />

before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> semester examinations. The<br />

following phases should be carried out during <strong>the</strong><br />

next six (6) months: - project preparation, data collection,<br />

data entry and analysis and preparation <strong>of</strong> a<br />

written report which should be submitted at <strong>the</strong> end<br />

<strong>of</strong> November.<br />

The written report should not exceed 25,000 words<br />
