The objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme are:<br />

1. To develop a thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> philoso-<br />

phy, assumptions, principles, elements, concepts,<br />

and techniques <strong>of</strong> Person Centred, Existential, Psycho-dynamic<br />

and Cognitive- Behavioural Schools <strong>of</strong><br />

Counselling.<br />

2. To develop high levels <strong>of</strong> competence in <strong>the</strong> practical<br />

application <strong>of</strong> this <strong>the</strong>oretical knowledge so as<br />

to facilitate specialization in any one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se approaches<br />

to counselling or <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> an eclectic or<br />

an integrative approach in keeping with <strong>the</strong> counsellors<br />

personal preferences, philosophy or values and<br />

<strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir clients.<br />

3. To provide supervision in a variety <strong>of</strong> counselling<br />

practica to increase skill levels in counselling.<br />

4. To improve self-awareness and counselling effectiveness<br />

by providing on-site group <strong>the</strong>rapy training<br />

and by encouraging students to obtain <strong>the</strong>rapy for<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

5. To develop a cadre <strong>of</strong> counsellors in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong><br />

education, social services and health who will be<br />

trained to deliver individual and group counselling<br />

and family <strong>the</strong>rapy services in <strong>the</strong>ir respective countries<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>.<br />

6. To develop a cadre <strong>of</strong> highly trained and qualified<br />

counsellors who are able to adapt predominantly<br />

European and North American counselling models<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> Indian context and who will have <strong>the</strong> re-<br />

search skills, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical foundation and <strong>the</strong> practical<br />

expertise required to ultimately develop <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own models <strong>of</strong> counselling which will be relevant to<br />

<strong>West</strong> Indian experiences.<br />

7. To provide counsellors with <strong>the</strong> kinds <strong>of</strong> experi-<br />

ences which will increase <strong>the</strong>ir awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> high<br />

standards <strong>of</strong> ethical practice which are expected and<br />

required <strong>of</strong> counsellors and which <strong>the</strong>y should demonstrate<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir own personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct.<br />

Entry Requirements:<br />

Applicants should have an Upper Second Class<br />

honours first degree in Counselling or in related<br />

fields in Health, Education, Social Work, Psychology<br />

or Pastoral Counselling/Theology from an institution<br />

acceptable to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong> for<br />

this purpose. Applicants should also have at least<br />

three years work experience. All applicants must<br />

possess an advanced level <strong>of</strong> ability to work in English.<br />

Entrance is competitive so only <strong>the</strong> most qualified<br />

persons will be accepted.<br />

Applicants should also have done <strong>the</strong> following qualifying<br />

courses at <strong>the</strong> undergraduate degree level, or<br />

if not, <strong>the</strong>y will be asked to do <strong>the</strong> following qualifying<br />

or pre-requisite courses before starting <strong>the</strong> Masters<br />

programme:<br />
