Course Description:<br />
CT60A, B,C: Cultural <strong>the</strong>rapy<br />
The program <strong>of</strong> Cultural Therapy consists <strong>of</strong> five<br />
broad areas: Ethno historical large group meetings;<br />
Centring Exercises; Psychohistoriographic Analysis;<br />
Collective poetry, play and musical writing/creation;<br />
Evaluation.<br />
CT61A: Educational Pedagogy<br />
This course is designed to equip students with a<br />
basic understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory behind teaching<br />
and learning. Emphasis will be made on <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong><br />
education as a tool for social change. Areas emphasized<br />
include planning for instruction, instructional<br />
strategies and evaluation and assessment <strong>of</strong> student<br />
learning. Classroom management strategies<br />
will also be addressed. The technology aspect <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> course will include word processing, presentations,<br />
record keeping, and computer-aided instruction<br />
(CAI).<br />
CT66A: Rehabilitation Management<br />
Students in this course will examine <strong>the</strong> practical<br />
aspects <strong>of</strong> nursing, physio<strong>the</strong>rapy and occupational<br />
<strong>the</strong>rapy that relate to Cultural Therapy. The course<br />
explores human movement and its importance in<br />
motivation, <strong>the</strong> detection <strong>of</strong> signs <strong>of</strong> medical illness,<br />
dealing with elderly, frail or disabled individuals, behaviour<br />
management in rehabilitation, and <strong>the</strong> assessment<br />
and management <strong>of</strong> daily living and voca-<br />
tional skills.<br />
CT63A, B, C: Practical Modules<br />
The practical module is designed to expose students<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Visual and Performing Arts, Music and Dance,<br />
Floral Arrangement and Crafts as well as o<strong>the</strong>r activities<br />
deemed appropriate by <strong>the</strong> course coordinator.<br />
It is expected that students will complete modules<br />
outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir area <strong>of</strong> expertise in order to broaden<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir skill base.<br />
CT64A/B: Supervised Practicum Experience<br />
After <strong>the</strong>ir first or second year in <strong>the</strong> programme<br />
students will spend <strong>the</strong>ir summer attached to sites<br />
where <strong>the</strong>y can receive practical experience in Cultural<br />
Therapy and build upon skills developed during<br />
<strong>the</strong> year. Students must be under <strong>the</strong> supervision <strong>of</strong><br />
a person working in <strong>the</strong> field. Students would be required<br />
to spend at least 4 days per week at <strong>the</strong>ir site.<br />
Students experiences will vary but should include<br />
opportunities to streng<strong>the</strong>n key Cultural Therapy<br />
skills, including planning, analysis, writing, organization,<br />
record keeping, teamwork, and problem solving.<br />
In addition, students will be involved in evaluating<br />
<strong>the</strong> effectiveness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir site by collecting empirical<br />
data. The course will bridge <strong>the</strong> gap between<br />
academic coursework and <strong>the</strong> practical knowledge,<br />
skills and emotional challenges that are inherent in<br />
<strong>the</strong> real world <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> helping pr<strong>of</strong>essional.<br />
