DM Emergency Medicine<br />

Programme Objectives: To train <strong>the</strong> candidate to<br />

Consultant level so that he/she may be capable <strong>of</strong><br />

running an Emergency Department and able to<br />

care for <strong>the</strong> varying emergencies that may present.<br />

Entry Requirements:<br />

Graduate <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Medical</strong> school recognized by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong> who has completed<br />

internship training.<br />

Duration <strong>of</strong> programme: Four years<br />

Programme Structure:<br />

The postgraduate Emergency Medicine Programme<br />

is a four-year residency programme starting in July<br />

(Mona) or January <strong>of</strong> each year. Six months <strong>of</strong><br />

each year are spent in emergency room rotations.<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>r six months are spent rotating through<br />

relevant subspecialty areas including anaes<strong>the</strong>sia,<br />

child health, internal medicine, surgery, orthopaedics,<br />

obstetrics and gynaecology, family medicine<br />

and psychiatry. Anaes<strong>the</strong>sia is mandatory as an<br />

early rotation to be done in <strong>the</strong> first year. However,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is flexibility in <strong>the</strong> sequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rotations in<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r disciplines. Candidates are encouraged<br />

to do one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two three-month A&E periods in<br />

<strong>the</strong> fourth year at an approved emergency room<br />

in a regional or international teaching hospital. A<br />

maximum <strong>of</strong> 6 months may be spent outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Caribbean (A&E and elective). Overseas elective<br />

rotations can be undertaken with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Coordinator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emergency Medicine Residency<br />

Program.<br />

Qualifying exams are administered after two years<br />

(Part I) and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> exit (Part II) exam.<br />
