MSc Epidemiology<br />

Programme Objectives:<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MSc program are expected to:<br />

Have knowledge <strong>of</strong> epidemiological concepts, principles,<br />

methods, sources <strong>of</strong> data and relevant ethical<br />

issues; be able to work with and interpret existing<br />

data.<br />

Describe trends and patterns <strong>of</strong> disease incidence,<br />

prevalence, burden <strong>of</strong> major diseases (both new and<br />

emerging) and factors affecting health status; indicate<br />

major etiologic and prognostic factors for <strong>the</strong><br />

same.<br />

Read, understand and evaluate <strong>the</strong> scientific literature<br />

relevant to epidemiology.<br />

Understand <strong>the</strong> strengths and weaknesses <strong>of</strong> major<br />

methodological and analytical techniques used in<br />

epidemiology.<br />

Develop testable hypo<strong>the</strong>ses, set out relevant research<br />

questions, design and develop a feasible research<br />

proposal.<br />

Apply epidemiological concepts, principles, methods<br />

and analytical techniques in research studies.<br />

Exhibit practical skills, including subject selection,<br />

data collection, study logistics; construct a data set;<br />

analyse a data set using existing statistical s<strong>of</strong>tware.<br />

Prepare a paper for presentation or publication.<br />

Appreciate <strong>the</strong> policy implications <strong>of</strong> epidemiologic<br />

research.<br />

Contribute to health service delivery policy develop-<br />

ment<br />

Entry Requirements:<br />

Candidates should be graduates in medicine, dentistry,<br />

veterinary medicine, o<strong>the</strong>r health sciences, or<br />

social sciences. The undergraduate record should<br />

be distinguished and an aptitude for <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

a quantitative discipline should be demonstrated.<br />

Candidates are expected to meet any and all o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

all matriculation requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>.<br />

Assessment and selection will be via review <strong>of</strong> curriculum<br />

vitae and interview.<br />

Duration <strong>of</strong> programme:<br />

Full time for 12 months starting in September<br />

Programme Structure: Award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MSc Epidemiol-<br />

ogy requires a minimum <strong>of</strong> 40 credit hours (inclusive<br />

<strong>of</strong> core courses and options) and a satisfactory project<br />

report.<br />
