5.1The future of population policyGlenn WithersGlenn Withers has recently returned to his position as Professor of Public Policy, Crawford School, <strong>Australia</strong>nNational University. Previously he was Chief Executive Officer of Universities <strong>Australia</strong>, the peak council for theuniversities of <strong>Australia</strong>. He has published numerous books <strong>and</strong> articles on economics <strong>and</strong> public policy.Professor Withers has also held major positions in government including as Head of the Economic Planning<strong>and</strong> Advisory Commission reporting to the Prime Minister <strong>and</strong> as Chair of the National <strong>Population</strong> Council. Hehas chaired national public inquiries into population, infrastructure <strong>and</strong> immigration <strong>and</strong> was Chair of theMigrant Skills <strong>and</strong> Qualifications Board. Professor Withers has also been adviser to major <strong>Australia</strong>n businesses<strong>and</strong> business groups, such as the Business Council of <strong>Australia</strong>, to international bodies such as the OECD <strong>and</strong> World Bank <strong>and</strong> tooverseas governments.
