COURSE DESCRIPTIONSPO 330 Legislative Process (4 SH)An examination of the development and functioning of Congressand the legislative process. Topics include the powers andresponsibilities of Congress, Congress’s role in policy making,Congressional leadership and committees and Congress’relationship with the other branches of government, politicalparties and interest groups.PO 331 Judicial Process (4 SH)An examination of the development and functions of the judicialsystem in the United States and the role of courts in the policyprocess. Topics include theories of law and jurisprudence, thestructure of the judiciary, civil and criminal procedures, judicialselection and decision-making and the impact of courts on thelegislative and executive branches.PO 333 American Presidency (4 SH)An examination of the development and functioning of the officeof the presidency. Topics include the powers and responsibilitiesof the president, presidential elections, the president’s impact ondomestic and foreign policy and the president’s relationship withCongress, the bureaucracy and the American people.PO 340 Political Parties and Interest Groups (4 SH)An examination of the development, structure and function ofpolitical parties and interest groups in the United States. Specialemphasis on the interrelationships between political parties andinterest groups and governmental institutions, the policyprocess, public opinion and voting behavior.PO 341 Public Administration (4 SH)An examination of the basic principles and practices ofadministration in the public sector. Topics include administrativestructures and organizations, intergovernmental relations,models of organization and decision-making, budgeting andfinancial management, personnel administration, ethics andleadership and the implementation of public policy in the federalsystem.PO 490 Senior Seminar (4 SH)An intensive, senior-level investigation of a selected topic in thefield of political science. The course involves reviewing pastresearch, developing and executing a research agenda andwriting a research paper.PR 111 Issues in Western Culture (4 SH)An introduction to the values, structures, conflicts, assumptionsand tendencies that have characterized cultures in the Westduring the past three thousand years. Such issues as human’srelationship to Nature, the meaning of heroism and therelationship between man and woman will be explored in bothclassic and contemporary texts.PR 238 World Religions (4 SH)The course will introduce students to several of the world’smajor religious traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism,Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
