COURSE DESCRIPTIONSEDS 443 Seminar and Project for Mild Moderate InterventionSpecialist (3 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 200, EDC 330, All professional educationcoursework and successful completion of all requirements inGate BStudents will produce lesson plans and must successfullycomplete an impact on student learning project. Other topics willbe addressed as needed. A grade of B or better must be attainedin EDS 440-42 and EDS 443 in order to be recommended forlicensure.ENGLISH (EN)EN 100 The Writing Process (4 SH)English 100 introduces students to the conventions of collegelevel/academic writing. Emphases include writing papers thatdevelop an argument and are grammatically correct. Studentwork will be collected in a portfolio, which will be assessed bythe English Department to determine readiness for EN 101. Byplacement only. Students must pass the course with a grade of Cor better to take EN 101.EN 101 Principles of Composition and Research (4 SH)Semester Offered: Fall and SpringStudy and practice of traditional techniques of rhetoric. Thecourse offers an introduction to the research process ofidentification, organization and presentation of source materials.EN 102 Honors Freshman Seminar (4 SH)This is an interdisciplinary course on a topic with an internationalfocus. The topic and course materials will vary according to theinstructor, but the course will include a number of significantwritten and oral assignments based on assigned readings. Thecourse will culminate in a research project designed by thestudent with the direction and approval of the instructor and willinclude an introduction to the research process of identification,organization and presentation of research materials.EN 140 Principles of Critical Analysis (4 SH)An introduction to aims, methodology and terminology of literarycriticism through the study of texts written in a variety offorms— fiction, non-fiction, prose and poetry—and drawn from avariety of cultural traditions.EN 160/260/360 Individual Investigation in English (2-4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): Permission of the instructorEN 170-79/270-79/370-79 Special Topics in English (2-4 SH)Courses in creative writing are listed under CM.EN 201 Advanced <strong>College</strong> Writing (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): EN 101 or PlacementAdvanced <strong>College</strong> Writing builds on the skills developed in EN101. Open to all students withpermission.EN 305 Composition Theory (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): EN 101, EN 140This course provides an introduction to the theories and issuesthat inform the discipline commonly known as rhetoric andcomposition, including writing-across-the-curriculum andprofessional communication. The course is intended to be asurvey of movements and topics important to the discipline ofcomposition. Many – but not all – of these relate to writinginstruction. Course topics include history of rhetoric andcomposition; writers, writing and revisions; reading; genretheory; writing-across-the-curriculum; matters of identity andlanguage. This course is appropriate for anyone who expects toteach writing and/or who is interested in the study of writing.EN 306 Linguistics (4 SH)The aim of this course is to provide background of several coreareas of the study of human language: Phonetics and phonology(sound structure and patterns), morphology (word structure),syntax (sentence structure) and semantics (the meaning of wordsand expressions).
