COURSE DESCRIPTIONSSA 311 Sports Events, Promotion and Sales Management (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101This course is designed to provide students with the theory, theconceptual framework and the practices associated withorganization, promotion and sales associated with sportingevents and associated products. Content includes rationale andbenefits of promotion and sales, sponsorship proposals, licensingprograms and solicitation of sponsors.SA 315 Legal Issues in Sports (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): SA 101, MN 200A presentation of the basic legal issues and interpretation of thelaw as it applies to sports and recreation. Topics includecontracts, torts, regulation of sports, legal terminology and legalprinciples as applied to the administration and management ofsports programs. Emphasis is on identifying and analyzing legalissues, the implications of those issues and the options forlimiting the liability of sports organizations. Cross-listed with LG312.SA 320 Leadership in Sports (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101An in-depth look at management and leadership theories andpractices as they relate to sport organizations. Leadership styles,traits, philosophies and the ability to be an effective leader indifferent situations are examined. The course will also focus onthe process of recruiting, developing, motivating and evaluatingpersonnel and their impact on sport leadership.SA 321 Sports in Education (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101This course focuses on organizational structures, administrativetechniques and the legal considerations in high school andcollege/university settings. Topics covered include governingbodies in local, state and national institutions, risk management,program development and facility planning as applicable toeducational settings.SA 328 International Sport Administration (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101This course develops a framework for understanding theinternational aspects of sport management by analyzing theimpact of globalization on the sport industry. Students will beintroduced to the managerial, human resource and culturaldifferences that effect international sport managers.International governance organizations, structures and strategiesare also examined.A course dealing with current issues and social trends includingtopics in health, mass media, work and unemployment, womenand ecology. Students also analyze dominant institutions thatshape society.SO 160/260/360 Individual Investigation in Sociology (2-4 SH)SO 170-79/270-79/370-79 Special Topics in Sociology (2-4 SH)SO 220 Sport Sociology (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101This course provides students with an understanding of the socialaspects of sport, with emphasis on the interrelationship of sportand society. Students will be encourages to think critically ontopics such as social values, education, religion, socialization,mass media, sexism and racism as they relate to the sportsindustry. Cross-listed as SA 220.SO 225 Race, Ethnic and Minority Relations (4 SH)The course focuses on prejudice, discrimination and institutionaldiscrimination by examining their historical, political andeconomic bases. Emphasis is on structural conditions whichpromote various forms of intergroup contact, with anexamination of the interaction and effects of ethnicity, genderand class.SO 236 Marriage, Family and Alternative Lifestyles (4 SH)This course examines various marital choices in their larger socialcontext. Topics include singlehood, ethnic families, cohabitation,single parent families, widowhood and processes withinmarriage. Academic research is combined with out-of-classroomassignments.SO 250/350 Internship in Sociology (1-5 SH)SO 338 Sociological Theory (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): Minimum of two courses in sociology, historyand/or political scienceThe study of critical analysts of society who established newvisions of social life, social thought and sociology as an academicdiscipline. Theorists included are Marx, Weber, Durkheim andcontemporary theorists.SOCIOLOGY (SO)SO 111 Introduction to Sociology (4 SH)A study of the interaction between the individual and the largersociety. Topics include the nature of society, social conditions,social organization and social change.
