COURSE DESCRIPTIONSEQ 260/360 Independent Study in Equine Studies (2-4 SH)This course is designed to offer the individual student anopportunity to pursue a special interest area that is outside theusual offerings. Requires faculty permission.EQ 301 Stable Management in a Foreign Setting (2 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): IS 300. Must have <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> facultyadvisor approval prior to registrationPractical experience in daily horse care under the supervision ofthe staff of the APA approved site.EQ 302 Training I (2 SH)Semester Offered: FallPre-Requisite(s): EQ 104, EQ 304 and Junior status.Theory and practice in initial training of young horses to ride.Students will be assigned an untrained or green horse for thesemester.EQ 303 Training II (2 SH)Semester Offered: SpringPre-Requisite(s): EQ 302Theory and practice in working with spoiled or green horses.Students will be assigned a green horse for the semester.EQ 304 Schooling (2 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 104 and sophomore statusThis course is for students interested in training a variety ofhorses on the flat and/or over fences. Considerable lab time isgiven for students to gain more experience in training green,spoiled or problem horses.EQ 306 Horsemanship in a Foreign Setting (2-4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): IS 300Development of riding skills and practice in horse trainingmethods under the direction of the staff at an APA approved site.Adequate riding ability, as determined by the Division of EquineStudies faculty or the specific APA Site. Must have faculty advisorapproval prior to registration.EQ 3<strong>07</strong> Principles of Therapeutic Horsemanship (2 SH)Semester Offered: SpringPre-Requisite(s): EQ 2<strong>07</strong>This course explores the development of quality programming,specific to meeting the needs of a population of people withchallenges. Goal identification, task analysis and lessonobjectives will be examined. Various techniques and approachesto therapeutic horsemanship will be studied.EQ 312 Principles and Theory of Competition (2 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 109, EQ 110, EQ 103 or EQ 102This course will teach students the theory, principles andexecution of skills necessary to prepare horses for competition ata national level. Students will learn to groom, clip, braid, outfitand exercise horses in a manner suitable to show at the highestlevels. This course will be team taught by 2-3 instructors whospecialize in the four disciplines offered in the equine program:hunters, jumpers, dressage, eventing. Students who successfullycomplete this course will acquire the professional skill sets toenable them to strengthen their employability as trainers,assistant trainers, barn managers and professional grooms.EQ 316 Methods and Materials of Teaching Riding I (4 SH)Semester Offered: FallPre-Requisite(s): Junior status and EQ 220A study of the effective means of teaching riding considering thephysical and psychological factors involved. Students observeand assist <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> instructors in riding activity classes aswell as practice teach under supervision. Emphasis on teachingbeginner and low-intermediate skills.EQ 317 Methods and Materials of Teaching Riding II (4 SH)Semester Offered: SpringPre-Requisite(s): EQ 316A continuation of EQ 316; emphasis in teaching upper-level skills.EQ 320 Equine Nutrition (4 SH)Semester Offered: FallPre-Requisite(s): EQ 109, 110, EQ 210A study of the requirements for a suitable diet for horsesaccording to age and activity. Emphasis will be placed onevaluating the horse’s need for basic nutrients and how thefeedstuffs are combined to form a quality diet.EQ 324 Pasture Management (3 SH)Semester Offered: FallPre-Requisite(s): EQ 320This course will study the nutritional benefits and growing habitsof many species of grasses and legumes, the horse’s naturalfoodstuff. Production and maintenance of productive pasturesand hay crops including soil testing and environmentalresponsibility are emphasized. Lectures, guest speakers and fieldtrips.EQ 331 Equine Lameness and Conditioning (4 SH)Semester Offered: SpringPre-Requisite(s): EQ 210, EQ 320EQ 309 Breeding Farm Management in a Foreign Setting (2-4 A study of the etiology, pathogenesis, signs, treatment andSH)possible prevention of many musculoskeletal problems of thePre-Requisite(s): IS 300 and EQ 181horse. Slides and x-rays are used to demonstrate normal andPractical experience in the care and handling of breeding animals abnormal conditions. Prevention of lameness through proper(stallions, mares, foals, weanlings and/or yearlings) under the conditioning will be discussed. Students routinely participate insupervision of the staff at an APA approved site. The type of care and management of school horses.experience may vary depending upon the specific farm and thetime of year.
