COURSE DESCRIPTIONSCI 341 Management Information Systems (4 SH)Semester Offered: FallPre-Requisite(s): CI 101A managerial overview of information systems. The course is anintroduction that focuses on the technical aspects of informationsystems from a managerial perspective. Topics include managingand developing information systems, managingtelecommunications and networks, the strategic role of IS,managing data resources, the internet and e-business, managingknowledge, the information technology infrastructure, hardwareand software issues in IT and IS security.CI 343 Database Management (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): CI 200Topics include the database development process, the entityrelationship model, object oriented modeling, logical andphysical design, SQL, database development and databaseadministration. Hands-on laboratory work will include learning adatabase development software environment. A group project indatabase development is a required component of the course.CI 346 E-business Technologies (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): CI 200An overview of relevant technologies related to e-business andthe internet. Topics include the internet infrastructure, e-business and web applications, site hosting, site security, e-business infrastructure and applications integration. Computerlab time will be devoted to the fundamentals of web applicationsoftware in preparation for a group project. A web applicationproject is a required component of the course.CI 348 Systems Analysis and Design (4 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): CI 200<strong>Cover</strong>s the development of information systems. Topics includeinformation systems development, the systems development lifecycle, problem & requirements analysis, data and processmodeling, systems design approaches, application architecturemodeling, database design, prototyping and user interfacedesign. An individual system development project is a part of thecourse.CRIMINAL JUSTICE (CJ)CJ 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice (4 SH)This survey course of American criminal justice encompasseslegal issues, sociological theories, policy and law enforcement,court and correctional practices. Its emphasis is on the study ofcontemporary criminal justice in America.CJ 220 Criminal Law and Procedure (4 SH)A course of study to familiarize the student with the classificationand types of criminal offenses and all aspects of criminalprocedures. Cross-listed as LG 220.CJ 230 Investigative Techniques (4 SH)A study of the skills necessary to carry out investigative factfinding(i.e. insurance work, preparation for trial, on-siteinvestigations, etc.). Includes public records research. Cross-listedas LG 230.CJ 311 Landmark Cases in Mental Health and the Law (4 SH)The purpose of Landmark Cases in Mental Health and the Law isto introduce students to the major Supreme Court cases thathave decided issues in mental health and related fields. Thiscourse will be a seminar in which students will read relevant caselaw in areas such as: competency to stand trial, criminalresponsibility, expert testimony, civil commitment, right totreatment, right to refuse treatment, capital punishment,workplace violence, etc. Additional readings will be assigned asnew cases are published. Cross-listed as LG 311, PS 311.CJ 324 Constitutional Law (4 SH)A study of the scope of federal powers, separation of powers andthe federal system, the Bill of Rights, due process and equalprotection. Cross-listed as LG 324, PO 320.CJ 327 Death Penalty in America (4 SH)The Death Penalty in America is a course designed to introducestudents to the legal, psychological and practical aspects of thedeath penalty. Emphasis will be placed on the landmark SupremeCourt Cases and the role that mental health experts play in deathpenalty litigation. There will be ample opportunity for discussionand debate. Cross-listed as LG 327, PS 327.CJ 330 Juvenile Delinquency (4 SH)This course on will objectively present diverse views andperspectives of juvenile delinquency and its interdisciplinarynature. This course offers an introduction to the field of juveniledelinquency and explores the concepts, theories, social,community and environmental influences and the justice system,as they relate to juvenile crime. Cross-listed as PS 330, SS 330.CJ 331 Judicial Process (4 SH)An examination of the development and functions of the judicialsystem in the United States and the role of courts in the policyprocess. Topics include theories of law and jurisprudence, thestructure of the judiciary, civil and criminal procedures, judicialselection and decision-making and the impact of courts on thelegislative and executive branches. The structure of the course will be lectures, discussion, casepresentations, debate and direct observation. Both academic andpractical experiences will cover juries, civil commitment, violenceprediction, competency, the insanity defense, eyewitnesstestimony and the death penalty.
