COURSE DESCRIPTIONSEDE 432 Content Specific Methods: 4/5 Language Arts andSocial Studies (3 SH)This course will be taught by a full-time faculty member withsmall group activities coordinated by 4th and 5th grade teachers.Candidates will review and survey the Academic ContentStandards for Grades 4 and 5 in Language Arts and Social Studies,develop a lesson plan (long form) and then teach the lesson tothe entire group. It is a full semester with a full school day supervisedexperience in selected area schools. Students will work withmaster teachers who will assist in assessing candidates’ progressas they practice teaching in early childhood levels. Students willdemonstrate their proficiency in teaching with students ofvarying abilities. A grade of B or better must be attained in EDE440-42 and EDE 443 in order to be recommended for licensure.EDE 443 Seminar and Project for Early Childhood (3 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): All professional education coursework andsuccessful completion of all requirements in Gate BStudents will produce lesson plans and must successfullycomplete an impact on student learning project. Other topics willbe addressed as needed. A grade of B or better must be attainedin EDE 440-42 and EDE 443 in order to be recommended forlicensure.EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT ANDINSTRUCTION (EDI)EDI 200 Intro to Early Childhood Education (2 SH)Candidates are introduced to the diverse opportunities withinthe early childhood profession. Candidates learn about the stateand national standards for early learning and for early childhoodprofessionals. Candidates discuss and reflect upondevelopmentally appropriate practice as defined by NAEYC.EDI 201 Cultural Competency in Early Childhood Education (3SH)This course exposes candidates to the concept of culturalcompetence and the appropriate applications in an earlychildhood setting inherent in the anti-bias curriculum approach.Candidates will demonstrate understanding of the qualitybenchmarks for cultural competence. Candidates will gainknowledge and skills to help them acknowledge the strengths,values and uniqueness of children, families and communities.EDI 202 Creative Experiences (3 SH)Participants are introduced to the concept of creativity and thenumerous approaches to implementation within an integratedcurriculum. Candidates will engage in hands-on experiences witha variety of media as well as planning and implementingdevelopmentally appropriate learning experiences. An emphasisis placed on dramatic play, art media and storytelling.EDI 300 Emergent Literacy (3 SH)This course provides an in-depth focus on the characteristics ofemergent literacy. Candidates learn the appropriate expectationsfor speech, reading, spelling and writing, including dual languagelearners. An emphasis is placed upon state and nationalstandards and appropriate authentic assessment to guide dailypractice.EDI 301 Infants and Toddlers (3 SH)This course focuses on the education and care of infants andtoddlers from birth to age three. Students exploredevelopmentally appropriate practices and materials thatencourage optimal growth and development. In-depthexploration of how to establish bonds and trust, dispositions,language development, planning the learning environment andworking with diverse families and the impact of these factors onbrain development and future cognitive, social, emotional andphysical development.EDI 302 The Preschool Child (3 SH)This course provides an in-depth focus on theories of behavioral,emotional, physical, cognitive and social characteristics ofchildren between three and four years of age.
