ACADEMIC POLICIESACADEMIC CREDITOverviewThe standard academic unit at <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> is the semesterhour. Courses are assigned semester hour values to reflect thediffering amounts of classroom contact, laboratory or studioactivity and outside preparation they require.Credit from Other InstitutionsStudents may register for courses at other institutions. If suchcourses are to become part of the program through which thestudent plans to meet the degree requirements of the <strong>College</strong> orrequirements for certification for teaching, the student must filea transient student form with the Registrar’s Office in advance.Credit hours earned in such courses do not count towardsresidency hours. Grades earned in such courses are included inthe student’s record but are not included in the computation ofthe grade point average. Such registration cannot be retroactive.Students must be in good academic standing to receive approvalfor transient work. International students may have additionalrestrictions applied.Transfer Evaluation Appeal ProcedureA student who has transferred to <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> will receive acopy of his or her transfer credit evaluation soon after beingofficially admitted to the <strong>College</strong>. The student should review thisevaluation immediately to be certain that all credits earned atother colleges and universities have been considered. It is thestudent’s responsibility to send to the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>Registrar’s Office an updated copy of any transcript listing creditsthat were not completed at the time of the student’s originaltranscript evaluation. Credits will not be applied until an officialtranscript is received by the Registrar’s Office. A student whodesires to challenge <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s award of transfer creditmust follow the procedure below:1. Contact the transfer evaluator to attempt to resolve thematter. The transfer evaluator will confer as necessarywith the Registrar.2. If the student and the evaluator cannot resolve thematter, the student may appeal to the Dean whooversees the subject matter involved.3. If resolution does not occur at the Dean level, thestudent may make a formal written appeal to the ASC.A student has six months from receipt of the transfer evaluationin which to appeal the award of transfer credit.Cross-RegistrationFull-time students can broaden the scope of their educationalopportunities through a system of cross registration. Students ingood academic standing may enroll in no more than one courseper semester at any of the participating Northeast Ohioinstitutions providing the course is not currently offered at <strong>Lake</strong><strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Participating students pay <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> tuitionfor the course and are responsible for transportation costs,laboratory fees or any special course fees required by the hostinstitution. Cross-registration credit is considered resident workand is counted as <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> credit for purposes of thesenior residency requirement. The cross-registration programdoes not apply to summer sessions and students will not beallowed to register for independent study or tutorial courses. Forfurther information, students should contact the Registrar’sOffice.ACADEMIC HONESTY AND CLASSROOMEXPECTATIONSClass AttendanceRegular attendance at all classes is important to the progress ofthe student. Classes are usually small in size which gives everystudent an opportunity to make a contribution in each classsession. The exchange of ideas and the give-and-take ofdiscussion are vital parts of the educational process. It istherefore important and necessary that students availthemselves of the opportunities afforded by the class sessions.Careful preparation for class is an important part of the totalprogram. Instructors are usually willing to help a student withmakeup work when the reason for class absence is reasonableand unavoidable. At the beginning of each semester, eachinstructor should inform students of all class requirements.Failure to attend the first class may cause a student to bedropped from the course at the discretion of the instructor.Freshmen are required to attend all classes. Students onacademic probation must attend all classes by order of theAcademic Standards Committee.Missed Class PolicyThe policy of <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> is that students are expected toattend all classes and complete all assignments and/orexaminations during the posted times. Circumstancesoccasionally dictate that not all students are able to attend allclasses.
