The following documents willbe accepted as proper evidence of an official name change: =• Certified copy of a marriage license, court order, ordissolution decree reflecting the new name in full;• Especially for non-U.S. citizens: Current passport orofficial proof of identity, certified by U.S. embassyabroad or by the appropriate foreign embassy in theU.S.Page | 31N.B.: For facilitation of records, all former names willremain in the official records system to be crossreferenced.MAJORS AND MINORSOverviewAll candidates for an undergraduate degree at <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>select a specialized area of study known as an academic major.Majors may be disciplinary, interdisciplinary or individualized innature. It is the responsibility of the student to be sure that alldegree and major requirements are fulfilled by the end of thesemester in which he or she plans to graduate. Students mustfulfill all major course requirements and total major credit hourrequirements. Any substitutions or exceptions to this policy mustbe sent by petition to the dean of the school in which the majoror minor exists. Requirements for each of the academic majorsand minors currently offered by the <strong>College</strong> are identified in thelist of Academic Majors and Minors. Complete coursedescriptions for all courses can be found in the CourseDescription section of the catalog.The Major Field of StudyThe major field of study is a carefully structured sequence ofcourses in a single subject or a combination of closely relatedsubjects. Basic or introductory courses are generally not includedin the major. No more than 64 semester hours in a single subjectdesignator may be counted towards graduation. A minimum of20 semester hours of the major field must be completed at <strong>Lake</strong><strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>. A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in the majoris required for graduation. Degree options and requirements forindividual majors are specified in the section of the catalogentitled Requirements for the Academic Major. Opportunitiesalso exist for the design of an individualized major with theassistance and approval of a faculty advisor. Students arerequired to officially declare a major by the time they reach 64semester credits earned. A registration hold may be placed bythe Registrar’s office until a declaration is received.Selecting an Academic MajorStudents are required to declare a major before the start of theirjunior year. Students entering with an associate’s degree or with64 or more semester hours of transfer credit are required todeclare a major upon admission. A student who wishes to earn adouble major must complete all the requirements of each majorbefore graduation. A second major cannot be earned after astudent has graduated. Earning a double major does not meanearning a second degree.Second Major/Second Bachelor DegreeA student who wishes to earn a double major must complete allthe requirements of each major before graduation. A secondmajor cannot be earned after a student has graduated. Earning adouble major does not mean earning a second degree. A studentwho has not yet graduated from <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> and wants toearn more than one degree must complete all the majorrequirements for each degree program and earn an additional 32credit hours above the 128 (160 minimum) credits required forgraduation. Students who have already earned a bachelor’sdegree at <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> or any other accredited institutionand desire to earn a second bachelor’s degree must complete aminimum of 32 semester credits and fulfill all the current GeneralEducation requirements as well as the requirements for themajor. A degree cannot be awarded twice; that is, a student canreceive only one bachelor of science, bachelor of arts or bachelorof fine arts degree. The major field of study determines thedegree awarded.The Minor Field of StudyAcademic minor programs of study generally consist of a seriesof courses, totaling 16 to 20 credits, that provide a coherentbody of knowledge in either a particular discipline or in aninterdisciplinary cluster. Although by design not as extensive asan academic major, the pursuit of an academic minor—while notrequired— will provide content knowledge and a credential in a<strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> | <strong>2012</strong> - 2013 <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Catalog</strong> | Student Handbook | Student Athlete Handbook
