COURSE DESCRIPTIONSEDP 318 Survey of Mathematics Concepts (3 SH)Semester Offered: FallThis course is designed for the education major and liberal artsmajor. It covers critical thinking with practical applications;approaches to problem solving, including inductive anddeductive reasoning; various problem-solving strategies, the useof patterns, graphs, calculators and technologies; set theory,Venn diagram and subsets; logic and analyzing arguments;number theory (prime and composite, factoring); mathematicalsystems (groups, bases, modular systems, finite systems); thereal number system with algorithmic methods and rules ofoperations; counting systems (permutations and combinations);sequences and series; basic concepts of geometry and itsapplications (spatial, symmetry, Pythagorean, measurement andgraphs); introduction to topology; chaos and factual geometry;probability of events and statistics (frequency, normaldistributions, standard deviation, regression and correlationanalysis). The content of this course is designed to follow theNCTM standards and the Ohio Academic Content Standards formathematics.EDP 326 Middle Grade Language Arts Methods (3 SH)Semester Offered: SpringThis course is designed to prepare middle grade school teachers(grades 4-9) with the skills necessary to teach reading, writing,listening/visual literacy and oral communication using structure,meaning, construction, application and multidisciplinaryapproaches to learning. Students will demonstrate the use ofOhio Department of Education’s Academic Content Standards toframe language arts instruction.EDP 411 Pre-Adolescent/Adolescent Literature (3 SH)This course considers the complex philosophical, biological andemotional changes occurring during pre-adolescence andadolescence as these changes relate to literature unique to themiddle level student. Trade books across genres explore thecontroversial challenges facing pre-adolescence and adolescencein contemporary society. The students are expected toinvestigate current research on issues related to readingpedagogy in an effort to develop effective strategies to motivatepre-adolescent and adolescent students toward reading as amode for personal growth.EDP 412 Middle Childhood Field Experience II (2 SH )Pre-Requisite(s): A grade of B or better in EDP 312 andsuccessful completion of all requirements in Gate AThis field is an intensive experience through which students willdemonstrate their abilities to plan and execute lessons in onecontent area. Note: If concentration is in more than one contentarea, students should not repeat the content area of EDP 312.They will demonstrate the use of technology in teaching andlearning episodes. Students should be given the opportunity topractice in inclusive clinical settings that reflect culturally,linguistically and academically diverse systems.EDP 420 Middle Grade Math Methods (3 SH)Semester Offered: SpringTeacher candidates will build a foundation in the middle gradesmathematics methods by understanding the historicaldevelopment in mathematics, including the contributions ofunderrepresented groups and diverse cultures. Students willbecome familiar with instructional strategies and appropriate useof technology for teaching mathematics. This course willemphasize assessing the mathematical understanding of eachstudent through the use of real life problems. While reviewingnational and state standards, teacher candidates willdemonstrate the teaching of mathematical concepts in a handsonsetting. Students will demonstrate the use of OhioDepartment of Education Academic Content Standards to framemath instruction.EDP 422 Middle Grade Social Studies Methods (3 SH)Semester Offered: FallThe purpose of this course is to offer teacher candidates middleschool social studies methods for teaching middle school socialstudies, techniques for assessing the learning of social studiesand to introduce them to professional journals, associations andconferences in social studies education. Students willdemonstrate the use of the Ohio Department of Education’sAcademic Content Standards to frame social studies instruction.EDP 424 Middle Grade Science Methods (3 SH)Semester Offered: FallStudy of the application of science processes in an inquirysetting. Teacher candidates will understand the interdisciplinarynature of concepts in earth science, environmental, life andphysical sciences and relate to contemporary events. Emphasis ison planning instruction based on knowledge of preadolescentstudents' needs, using a variety of instructional strategies andmaterials as well as electronic educational technology toenhance hands-on laboratory activities. Students willdemonstrate the use of the Ohio Department of Education’sAcademic Content Standards to frame science instruction.EDP 440-42 Student Teaching: Middle Childhood (9 SH)Pre-Requisite(s): All professional education coursework andsuccessful completion of all requirements in Gate BStudent teaching is the culminating professional semester for theprogram. It is a full semester with a full school day supervisedexperience in selected area schools. Students will work withmaster teachers who will assist in assessing candidates’ progressas they practice teaching in middle childhood levels. Students willdemonstrate proficiency in each cognate level.
