(Joos) Hefer, L. (Lex) Mpati, F.D.J.(Fritz) Brand (appointed in 2005) andI.G. Farlam. These jurists, as well asHigh Court judges and distinguishedmembers of the bar and sidebar, assist inthe training of students, either by meansof formal presentations, public or guestlectures, lectures to under- and postgraduatestudents, participation inresearch projects or the evaluation of lecturers.This special group of professors alsoserve on the faculty’s advisory board,the Collegium Iurisprudentium, whichassists the dean and faculty with curricula,the composition of the LL.B. andmaster’s modules and study material.An LL.M. in Human Rights, specialisingin Reproductive and Sexual Rights,was introduced in partnership with theFord Foundation. This programme, withProf. Charles Ngwena (ConstitutionalLaw and Philosophy of Law) as co-ordinator,is the first of its kind at a SouthAfrican higher education institution. Itfocuses on grooming lawyers from theAfrican continent to play an importantrole in the realisation of reproductiveand sexual rights at national and internationallevel.The University of the Free State is theonly university in the country whichpartners with the Witness ProtectionProgramme Unit on an educationallevel. Since the protection of threatenedwitnesses is of vital importance to secureconvictions, particularly against organisedcrime syndicates, knowledge of thelaw pertaining to witness protection is ofcritical importance to future lawyers.
