Shenandoah Conservatory • 256EvaluationThe student performs an end-of-semester jury for evaluation by a panel of applied musicfaculty.If a student fails to perform the jury, the instructor must report a grade of “F” for thesemester’s study. Incomplete grades will only be considered upon submission of theappropriate medical documentation; the missed jury must be completed during thedrop/add period of the next semester.Screening JuriesThe screening jury, conducted at the end of the fourth semester of applied major study (orfor composition students the end of the second semester), examines the student’s progressin applied music and leads to decisions regarding the student’s future applied study.The screening jury determines if the student has made sufficient progress in the applied area towarrant the recommendation to proceed with the curricular applied major. A minimumaverage grade for the jury is “C.” If the jurors do not recommend proceeding and the averagegrade for the jury is less than “C,” the student may repeat the work of the fourth semester ofapplied study or successfully audition for and enter a new applied area.Permission to enter performance certificate study is granted at the screening jury. MusicalTheatre majors are required to complete a screening jury only if they wish to beconsidered for performance certificate study.Recital RequirementsAll half and full recitals must be presented for credit and included in the student’s courseload for the semester in which the recital is given. Students presenting a half or full recitalmust be concurrently registered for applied study in the area involved. Pre-recital hearingsare required of all piano and voice majors, and may be required of other students at theapplied music instructor’s discretion.After four semesters of applied music study and 200-level study is completed, the studentmay present a half recital, which consists of 25 minutes of music. A full recital consists of 50minutes of music. For detailed requirements, refer to the division handbook.Performance CertificatesA Music or Musical Theatre student may earn a Performance Certificate in recognition ofachievement beyond curricular minimums with the completion of a full recital.The additional repertoire and the recital must be completed while the student is enrolledin a baccalaureate-level degree program. The grade point average for the final semesters ofapplied study, plus the full recital, must be at least a 3.5.Permission to enter performance certificate study is given as part of the screening juryprocess. Information on timing, content, and required level of achievement for these juries isavailable from the individual applied music instructor, division chair, or from the divisionhandbook.
