Course Descriptions • 439N 209 Health Across the Lifespan:Psychiatric Mental Health NursingThis didactic and clinical course assists the student to integrate and apply essential knowledge from biopsychosocialsciences associated with the individual’s emotional and behavioral responses to common livedexperiences across the continuum of care throughout life. Principles of caring behaviors along with therapeuticcommunication principles and skills will form the basis for Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing care. Commonmental health lifespan issues along with psychiatric mental health disorders will be addressed. Nursing care thatfosters a higher level of mental health function and enhanced life quality is emphasized. Clinical experiences willinclude hospital and community sites. Concurrent enrollment in NLAB 209, N 272 and N 283 is required.Prerequisite: PSY 101 or equivalent. Four credits.N 213 Fundamentals and Skills for Nursing PracticeThis laboratory course introduces the accelerated second degree track nursing student to basic and intermediateskills that are essential to providing direct nursing care to individuals across the lifespan with a variety of livedexperiences. Concurrent enrollment in NLAB 213 is required. Three credits.N 214 Health Across the Lifespan: Adults IThe intent of this course is to facilitate the development of knowledge, skills, values, meanings and experiences inorder to provide comprehensive nursing care of diverse patients with alterations in fluid and electrolyte balance,diabetes, perioperative, pulmonary and cardiovascular function. Concurrent enrollment in NLAB 214 is required.Prerequisites: N 201, N 283 and N 272. Five credits.N 216 Lifespan Development and NutritionThis course introduces the student to knowledge, skills, values, meanings and experiences essential tounderstanding the development of individuals, families and communities across the lifespan. In addition to growthand development, the course examines nutritional wellness including the relationship between food, nutrition andhealth. Therapeutic nutrition for use in the treatment of health alterations will be introduced. Three credits.N 217 Veteran Transition SeminarThis course prepares the Veteran BSN student for a successful transition from military to civilian healthcaresystems and facilitate the adjustment and integration into civilian academia. Personal growth and expandingperspectives will be highlighted. The student will be challenged intellectually and technologically with opportunitiesfor reflection, review, and enhancement of technology and critical thinking skills. Building on preexisting knowledgeand experiences, the student will gain an understanding of professional nursing and what constitutes professionalnursing practice at the baccalaureate level. Enrollment is limited to students in the Veteran to BSN (V-BSN)program. One credit.NLAB 222 Skills for Nursing Practice IThis laboratory course complements N 200 skills and introduces the student to additional beginning skills used inproviding comprehensive nursing care to individuals across the lifespan. Concurrent enrollment in N 201 isrequired. One credit.N 272 PathophysiologyThis course is designed to assist the student in developing basic knowledge, skills, values, meanings and experiencesassociated with the pathophysiology of common illnesses/diseases. Emphasis is placed on cellular, tissue, organ andsystems concepts as they interact to influence the health of human beings across the lifespan. Prerequisites: BIO260, BIO 231, BIO 232 and CHEM 121 or equivalents. Three credits.N 283 PharmacotherapyThis course examine theories and basic principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacogeneticswhich provide a foundation for critical thinking, the application of research findings and the utilization of the nursingprocess in the use of pharmacotherapeutic agents to diverse clients across the lifespan. MATH 210 is required ifTEAS math score is unsatisfactory. Three credits.N 306 Theory, Reasoning and Research in NursingThis course is designed to assist the student in developing knowledge, skills, values, meanings and experiencesassociated with utilization of theory, research, and reasoning in nursing practice. Students will learn how totranslate and utilize replicated research in nursing practice. Student must pass N 214 before enrollment to thiscourse. Additional prerequisite: MATH 207 or equivalent. Three credits.
