Bachelor of Music in Music EducationJeffrey Marlatt, Associate Professor of MusicRuebush Hall, Room 216, (540) 545-7349, jmarlatt@su.eduShenandoah Conservatory • 299The Bachelor of Music in Music Education curriculum is intended for students who plan toteach music in the public schools and seek licensure as a qualified music teacher by a statedepartment of public instruction. Students complete courses in music, music teachingtechniques, and general education studies to fulfill requirements for the K-12 Virginia musicteaching license. The degree program includes a balanced combination of courses, teachingexperiences, and performance opportunities designed to foster and develop skills asmusicians and teachers and prepare students for successful careers in music teaching.Program ObjectivesStudents completing the Bachelor of Music in Music Education will be able to:• demonstrate musicianship in solo and ensemble performance;• demonstrate knowledge of music theory and music history;• demonstrate knowledge of historical and contemporary concepts of the music teachingprofession;• design culturally responsive instruction to meet a variety of student needs utilizing 21stCentury pedagogy; and• lead learning experiences using appropriate techniques for elementary and secondarymusic students.AdmissionStudents are admitted to the Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree program basedon the entrance criteria established by the university and Conservatory. Students follow thecourse of study published in the Shenandoah University <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Catalog</strong> for the yearof entrance to the university.All initial licensure teaching education programs at Shenandoah University require that thePraxis I, Math Exam must be passed before admission to candidacy in teacher educationprograms. BME students who do not pass the Praxis I, Math Exam may be grantedpermission to pursue alternate routes to candidacy as stated in the Bachelor of Music inMusic Education Handbook. Students are admitted to candidacy following successfulcompletion of the Sophomore Screening. BME students must pass the VirginiaCommunication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) prior to the screening interview.Sophomore ScreeningThe Sophomore Screening is conducted at the end of the fourth semestester of study inthe Bachelor of Music in Music Education curriculum. All students in the Music Educationprogram are required to apply for candidacy to the teacher education licensure program.Faculty will conduct screening interviews for each student at the end of the sophomoreyear to assess whether the student’s academic, personal and professional progress qualifieshim/her for candidacy.
