Each student learns todemonstrate characteristic tone quality and elementary technique on at least one stringed instrument. Thiscourse is offered as needed.<strong>MU</strong>S 302 STRING INSTRUMENT PEDAGOGY2 s.h.This course is designed to prepare students to teach private lessons in violin, viola or cello from beginningthrough early advanced levels. The course addresses teaching principles of a wide range of contemporarypedagogues including Shinichi Suzuki, Ivan Galamian and Kato Havas. Offered as needed.<strong>MU</strong>S 303 WOODWIND TECHNIQUES1 s.h.Methodology of teaching woodwind instruments for students seeking teacher licensure. Each student learnsto demonstrate characteristic tone quality and elementary technique on each woodwind instrument. Thiscourse is offered as needed.<strong>MU</strong>S 304 BRASS AND PERCUSSION TECHNIQUES1 s.h.Methodology of teaching brass and percussion instruments for students seeking teacher licensure. Eachstudent learns to demonstrate characteristic tone quality and elementary technique on each brass andpercussion instrument. This course is offered as needed.<strong>MU</strong>S 409 PIANO PEDAGOGY3 s.h.Materials and methods for teaching beginning piano through intermediate and early advanced levels withemphasis on notation, scales, technique, style, and interpretation. Students observe private and groupinstruction and are supervised in the teaching of beginning piano students. Prerequisite: permission of theinstructor. This course is offered as needed.EDU 410 <strong>MU</strong>SIC MATERIALS AND METHODS IN ELEMENTARY ANDSECONDARY EDUCATION I2 s.h.Materials and methods of teaching music to elementary and secondary students with emphasis on voicedevelopment and organization and teaching of choral and instrumental groups. EDU 410 is takenimmediately before the student teaching semester. This course is offered as needed. (See EDU 410-418 inthe Education Department section, page 219).EDU 418 <strong>MU</strong>SIC MATERIALS AND METHODS IN ELEMENTARY ANDSECONDARY EDUCATION II2 s.h.Materials and methods of teaching music to elementary and secondary students with emphasis on voicedevelopment and organization and teaching of choral and instrumental groups. EDU 418 is taken during thestudent teaching semester. This course is offered as needed. (See EDU 410-418 in the EducationDepartment section, page 219).APPLIED <strong>MU</strong>SIC COURSESAn additional fee is charged for all private music lessons (see Finances, page 228). Emphasis is onacquiring musical concepts and technical proficiency, as well as the thorough study of representativeliterature.Frequent opportunities to perform are provided in recitals, including general student recitals and partialor full formal recitals. Additional performance opportunities are made available through accompanyingvocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles. One s.h. is granted for successful completion of a courseinvolving one lesson (1/2 hour). Two s.h. are granted for two lessons each week. All music majors arerequired to perform in one student recital per semester. Any student that does not fulfill the recitalrequirement shall receive an F in their applied lesson for that particular semester.A jury examination is normally required at the end of each semester. A full recital (about sixtyminutes) and a half-recital (about thirty minutes) are required of all students pursuing the B.M. in76
