The Unseen PowerAWAR has ended, a world has perished in the realm ofthought and begun to disappear in the order of outwardNature. The war that has ended, was fought in physicaltrenches, with shell and shot, with machine-gun and tank andaeroplane, with mangling of limbs and crash of physical edificesand rude uptearing of the bosom of our mother earth;the new war, or the old continued in another form, that isalready beginning, will be fought more with mental trenchesand bomb-proof shelters, with reconnaissances and batteriesand moving machines of thought and word, propaganda andparties and programmes, with mangling of the desire-souls ofmen and of nations, crash of many kinds of thrones and highbuiltinstitutions and strong uptearing of the old earth of customwhich man has formed as a layer over the restless moltenforces of evolutionary Nature. The old world that is shaken outwardlyin its bases and already crumbling in some of its parts,is the economic and materialistic civilisation which mankindhas been forming for the last few centuries from once newmaterials now growing rapidly effete pieced out with brokenremnants of antiquity and the middle ages. The period of militaryconflict just at an end came to breach that which thoughthad already been sapping, an era of revolutions has openedwhich is likely to complete the ruin and prepare the buildingof a new structure. In this struggle the question arises tothe thinking man, what Power or what Powers are expressingtheir will or their strivings in this upheaval? and we, whatpower or powers shall we serve? to what thing inward or superhuman, since outward thrones and systems are but as leavesdriven before the storm-wind of the breath of Time, shall weowe allegiance? what or whom is it that we shall fight to enthrone?
