Still it is the verybusiness of a subjective age when knowledge is increasing anddiffusing itself with an unprecedented rapidity, when capacityis generalising itself, when men and nations are drawn closetogether and partially united though in an inextricable, confusedentanglement of chaotic unity, when they are being compelledto know each other and impelled to know more profoundlythemselves, mankind, God and the world and when the idea ofself-realisation for men and nations is coming consciously to thesurface, — it is the natural work and should be the conscioushope of man in such an age to know himself truly, to find theideal law of his being and his development and, if he cannoteven then follow it ideally owing to the difficulties of his egoisticnature, still to hold it before him and find out gradually the wayby which it can become more and more the moulding principleof his individual and social existence.
