A P P E N D I XIChapter 6: LulzSec HacktivitiesFollowing is a list of hacktivities blamed on and/or claimed by the original or first crew ofthe “LulzBoat”/LulzSec hacker group (not LulzSec Reborn or other spin-offs and successors).Due to the nature of the activity, it is not feasible to present a complete account of hacks associatedwith the group. Although they were highly vociferous about their hacks and gainedconsiderable media attention from its very beginnings, the account of LulzSec’s hacktivities islikely to reflect what the group intended to reach public attention. In media control, LulzSecwas able to hide likely failures and only hone successful attacks. For the compilation of the listbelow, we only used open source media and included details such as motivation where availableto add more depth to the identity of this hacker group. Although LulzSec repeatedly proclaimsfun as the motivation for its breaches on some occasions, political opinions certainlyplayed a role:Approximate dateTarget, hacktivity, and modus operandi(where available)DetailsMay 5, 2011May 10, 2011Personal information of at least 73,000 X-factor Lulz 3contestant hopefuls by hacking into Fox.com 1,2Fox.com sales database and personal informationon users released 4May 13, 2011May 15, 2011May 23, 2011Intrusion and publication of names and e-mails(passwords and user names) of more than 400 FoxBroadcasting employees, encourages sympathizersto use the published information for harassment 5,6LulzSec steals and releases of the transaction logs of3100 ATMs in the UK 9,10Sony’s Japanese Web site (sonymusic.co.jp) seesdatabase pilfered and published (redacted) 11–13@FOXUPTV, dislike of Fox Newschannel, 7 Lulz 8#Sownage 14 ; SQL injection, toembarrass Sony 15–17May 30, 2011Defacement of the official Web site of the American Frontline documentation aboutPublic Broadcasting Service (PBS); the exploitation WikiLeaks which was perceived to beof vulnerabilities in PBS’ system also allowed the partial 20gleaning and subsequent publication of more than2000 PBS passwords and login details 18,19Continued245
