Observation in thefield also show that children are able to answer questions their parents are unableto as they remember information from skits or programmes provided throughvisiting NGOs.In regard to communication mediums, survey results indicate that people rely ontelephone and mobile phones as the main form of communication. However, thesemediums are often unreliable as coverage is very poor and often not functioning. Inthe event of a disaster communications are usually one of the first things to beaffected. It is therefore recommended that the issue of improving communication inthis region be addressed. 3.1.3 - Section 3 Housing Impact AssessmentIn order to assess the impact of PSI’s mason training programmes and subsequentdissemination of information on earthquake-safe features at the community level,an inspection of all new buildings erected in thestudy areas during the last 12 months (specifywhen) has been carried out. The survey wasconducted in order to determine whether or notearthquake-safe features had been incorporatedinto new constructions where masons havebeen trained in these techniques. The surveycovers two regions: 1) Study Area A –Rudraprayag district, where PSI has workedextensively on disaster awareness programmesand has trained over 200 masons inearthquake-safe building features; 2) StudyArea B – Almora district, where no masons have been trained in earthquake-safebuilding features and disaster awareness campaigns have not been initiated byPSI or other agencies. A further dimension to the study is to observe trends orshifts in building practices or materials in the region.The results of Study Area A and B are presented separately, and broken down intooverall structures, load-bearing, and frame structures. A comparison of the tworegions concludes this segment of the study.3.1.3a Study Area A – Rudraprayag districtThe survey indicates that 52 houses had been built by 50 different masons (seeTable 3.2). Of those 50 masons, 21 had attended PSI workshops.
