Self-discipline, in the best sense, is never truly a discipline undertaken alone. As a community,we value and respect each other, and that also means we desire that each member of ourcommunity has an opportunity to learn what it means to live life to its fullest. Self-discipline isrelated to the choices that each member of the community makes. We also recognize that thechoices we make as individuals affect the nature of the entire community. This handbook outlines our understanding of what it means to live together as Christians. Itupholds our values and is underscored with a Christian description of the reasons for thosevalues. In our community, we understand that living a full life begins with a relationship with God.In the Values Violations section, we have listed ways that people violate our community values asaway to remind people of the importance of these values. All members of our community have chosen to be here voluntarily. The values and standardsdescribed throughout this handbook are reasonable expectations regarding the behavior ofindividuals and seek to describe a community in which “diversity is appreciated and Christianlove is practiced.”Value: IntegrityWe value living lives that are true; lives characterized by honesty and wholeness; lives that arecomplete, whole, and grounded in the Christian tradition.Value: Worth of the IndividualWe value the intrinsic worth of every individual in our community and seek to honor differentopinions, attitudes, backgrounds, and beliefs.Value: Self-DisciplineWe value intellectual, spiritual, and moral development and recognize the need for personalresponsibility and responsible self-expression as we seek to become lifelong learners and ofservice to the community.Value: Respect for Community AuthorityWe value our freedom but understand our need to exercise that freedom responsibly within theguidelines set forth by this community.Value: Respect for Property and Stewardship of the EnvironmentWe value the privilege of living in community and understand that our responsibility as stewardsof this community requires acting in ways that respect the property of others, the environment, and the future of this University.20
