It is important to understand that, in addition to specific University policies, alllocal, state, and federal laws pertain to behavior on campus. Students are responsible forfamiliarizing themselves with the rules and regulations outlined in this handbook. Students areexpected to be responsible for their own behavior at all times.People who live in communities generally find it necessary to establish rules and regulationsgoverning their behavior. Whether the rules are elaborate codes of law or simply unwritten normsof acceptable behavior, those rules of society are established to afford the greatest safety andcomfort possible to the members of the community. In this regard, the University community isnot unlike other communities. Written and unwritten standards of conduct have been establishedover the years to allow the collective group of scholars and students the opportunity to pursueknowledge within a compatible environment. Students at UD are expected to act as good citizensby exhibiting respect for order, morality, personal honor, and the rights of others. The Universityalso expects that in all relationships, students will be guided by a mutual concern for eachother’s integrity, needs, and feelings. Not only should students be concerned about their ownbehavior, they should extend support and direction to fellow students whose behavior appearsharmful to themselves or the community.56
