Even if you have a detailed syllabus, you cannot know what the professor isemphasizing unless you attend class every day. When you are in class, you will hear questionsfrom your classmates that you can compare with and use to build your own understanding. You will be able to profit from in-class assignments. You will have up-to-date information aboutmid-course schedule changes and content additions or deletions. You will develop a network ofclassmates with whom you can study for exams. Most importantly, you will get to know yourprofessors, and they will get to know you and understand that you are trying hard and aremotivated to do well. These impressions can positively affect the way you are evaluated. If you miss class due to illness, athletics, or for any other reason, you are responsible forpersonally notifying faculty of the reason for the absence and developing a plan for making upany missed work. The Athletic Department will provide faculty with a list of athletes participatingin an upcoming event, but each student athlete is still expected to personally notify faculty atleast one class session prior if they will be out of class participating in an athletic event. In allcircumstances, it is up to the individual student to make arrangements to make up any missedwork. The Office of Student Life is available to help college students notify faculty in emergencysituations. In these circumstances, please call 563/589-3128 or stop by the Office of Student Lifelocated on the second floor of Peters Commons.Students should take a Student and Student-Athlete Medical Referral Form to all medicalappointments so the physician can indicate if the student should be medically released fromclasses. The form has specific areas: 1) student may return to class immediately, 2) at a laterspecified date, and 3) student is to be re-evaluated prior to returning to classes/activity.The Medical Coordinator will give the student a Medical Referral Form when their appointment isarranged. If the student arranges their own appointment and is advised that they not attendclass, medical documentation should be turned into the Medical Coordinator for verification. Thisis for the health and safety of the student and the UD community. The Medical Coordinator willverify with the student’s professors the class absence via email, but it is still the student’sresponsibility to personally notify their professors of any class missed due to illness and thestudent is responsible for all course work. The Office of the Medical Coordinator and the Office of Student Life are available to help studentsnotify faculty when emergency or sensitive conditions exist.22
