The resource people for questions about housing concerns will be the <strong>Student</strong> Life administrativestaff. The <strong>Student</strong> Life <strong>of</strong>fice is committed to a living environment free from abuses, intimidation,or harassment where everyone is treated with respect and courtesy, including staff members.Intercollegiate Athletic ProgramNo student shall be forbidden to participate in any athletic program (varsity or intramural) solelyon his/her HIV status. <strong>Student</strong>s are not required to inform coaches or teammates, however,entering varsity athletes are required to have a physical examination before being allowed to play(HIV testing is not required). We encourage any athlete who is HIV positive, or who has anychronic health problem, to share this information with the athletic medical coordinator in aconfidential manner. Each case must be decided on an individual basis to ensure that playing asport will not be detrimental to the individual. Should any student sustain an injury in whichbleeding is present, the athletic trainers and coaches shall have the means and educationavailable to prevent possible transmission <strong>of</strong> illness.Responsibility <strong>of</strong> Infected IndividualsIndividuals who are infected with HIV, or who have a reasonable basis for believing that they areinfected with HIV, must conduct themselves responsibly for the protection <strong>of</strong> themselves andother members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> community.Medical Treatment and Psychological Follow-UpThe Vice President and Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>Student</strong> Life shall assist the student to make provisions formedical, psychological, and support services that promote the best physical and mental health <strong>of</strong>persons with HIV infection. If these services are beyond the scope <strong>of</strong> comparable servicesprovided on campus, the <strong>University</strong> shall identify other care providers who will see students byreferral.<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dubuque</strong> AIDS CommitteeThe committee shall be composed <strong>of</strong>:• Vice President and Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>Student</strong> Life• UD Medical Coordinator• An administrator• A faculty member• A seminary student• A college student• Advising physician and legal counsel may be consulted, when necessary.It shall be responsible for recommending policies in the various aspects <strong>of</strong> AIDS and HIVinfection to the students, faculty, and cabinet. It is also available to evaluate, on an anonymousor confidential basis, individual cases <strong>of</strong> HIV infection within the <strong>University</strong> community, torecommend appropriate responses, and to answer any questions in regard to policy. Thecommittee shall also assist with the education processes.64
