The problem that encountered thestudents in translating the cultural items is that some of them are not lexicalised into Arabic. Thestudents' problem in translating such cultural items is that they did not know how to deal withsuch problems. These are possible meanings for translating the item 'chancellor'.However, in this context, it should be rendered as المالية"‏ This‏."وزير indicates that students usedthe dictionary and selected one of the multiple meanings of this item without thinking of thecontext. Some students had problems in selecting the appropriate TL item that already exists intheir minds. Furthermore, they could not select the right translation from the entries, list ofmeanings for one item. This shows that the students could not make a good use of the contextbecause of poor reading skills as in the case of 'chancellor'. The other problems in errors ofselection are the choice of TL items that are not clear for the TL readership and are not used inArabic as in the case of 'shadow cabinet' and ‘shadow minister.'رئيس الوزراءArab World English JournalISSN: 2229-9327www.<strong>awej</strong>.org249
