NEPAD’scontributions tothe MDGsPanel discussion on NEPAD and theMDGs: Progress, Challenges and theWay Forward7 October 2011New YorkThis discussion is timely and relevant as it comes at a time whenNEPAD is celebrating its 10th anniversary, while the target dateof 2015 set for achieving the MDGs is fast approaching and considerationis already being given to a possible post-MDG developmentagenda. My remarks today will recall the nexus between NEPAD and theMDGs, examine the achievements of these two vital developmentframeworks and highlight some of the vital work that has been doneby the United Nations to promote their laudable objectives. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the New Partnershipfor African Development (NEPAD) are inextricably linked. TheMDGs aim to achieve vital objectives in poverty reduction, education, health, gender, and environment and serve as a reference formeasuring development progress while NEPAD is at once a visionand strategic framework to increase the pace and impact of Africa’ssocio-economic development. The MDGs and NEPAD thus have similargoals and both rely on partnerships at the global and regionallevels for their successful implementation. Indeed, NEPAD can bedescribed as the framework for achieving the MDGs in Africa.NEPAD’s programmes, projects and targets are accordingly consistentwith and closely aligned to the achievement of the MDGs.
