growth objectives and those focused on the environment in accordancewith national strategies.In that regard, climate change mitigation strategies offer a clear exampleof co-coordinated and harmonised policies that take advantageof such synergies. This is why this workshop is very crucial. It is aworthwhile investment, fundamental to all development projects inhigh-risk areas in Africa.We must come up with recommendations on ways to mainstreamclimate risk management into national policy-making processes inAfrica. As well proper consideration must be given to the creationof appropriate communication and information channels so that theelements that make up policies at different levels can operate in amutually reinforcing manner. I also wish to exhort you to explore thepossibility of convening “training of trainers” workshops on the climatedimensions of risk management at the various sub-regional officesof ECA and the African Institute for Economic Development andPlanning (IDEP), so that in the near future, the capacity of Africancountries in climate risk management can be further developed.ECA is proud to be in this partnership because of the significantcontribution that climate risk management can make to our mutualquest to attain the MDGs and help African countries develop andimplement home grown solutions to some of the challenges facingthe continent.218 Part Five
