Partnershiparound theAfrican TradePolicy Centre13 April 2006Addis AbabaThe formation of active partnerships with the African Union, AfricanDevelopment Bank, UNDP and other UN agencies as well asbilateral partners is central to our vision at ECA for sharpening thefocus of our activities and improving service delivery to our MemberStates. In my view, such relationships should facilitate an exchangeof views and a strategic engagement with our partners across theboard. It should also assist us in identifying potential areas of cooperationas well as priorities and modalities for the joint delivery ofservices to our clients.It is against this background that this Partnership Roundtable of theAfrican Trade Policy Centre has been arranged. The Centre was setup within the Trade and Regional Integration Division of ECA in 2003with the financial support of the Canadian Government through theCanada Fund for Africa. The main objective of ATPC is to assist Africancountries in formulating and implementing sound trade policiesand enable them to participate more effectively in internationaltrade negotiations.Trade is an important issue for African countries because it is generallyacknowledged to be an engine of growth. It can help generateinvestment and provide access to intermediate and capital goods,foreign technology and essential medicines. It has also become moreimportant for African countries because it is an important means byIntegrating Africa147
