The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) of the AU, whose objectiveis to monitor governance in Africa, is an important instrumentfor mutual accountability on the African side. Recent APRM reportsdocument substantial progress by peer-reviewed countries in all areasof governance – economic, political, corporate and social - andthe enormous additional financing needed to sustain progress and tomake progress in other areas. For Ghana, according to the President, additional financing is in the neighbourhood of $5 billion to enablethe country to bridge the identified gaps in the review process. The Cairo Plenary also recommended, congruent with the purposeof this meeting, that ECA should revitalise its African Learning Group(LG) on Poverty Reduction Strategies; its remit should be expandedand the LG itself remodelled into an effective Peer Learning activityon PRS and MDGs. ECA is committed to doing that.In conclusion, it is my hope that we will rise from this meeting with ashort list of actionable recommendations on how to ensure that thenoble commitments of the international community to assist Africaare met and that Africa keeps to her part of the bargain.Integrating Africa71
