OPERATIONseparation as it will be when making measurements. Again keep hands or otherobjects away from the clips while performing null cal. See the illustration above.SMD TWEEZERSSMD tweezers present a challenge to calibrate accurately, since their position canvary and the operators hands are always present when making measurements.Use a piece of copper (shorting block) about the same dimensions as the devicesto be measured, as the shorting wire. DO NOT just touch the tips together. Ashorting block can be made from an SMD device by connecting the two ends withcopper tape or solder to create a short circuit. When performing open circuit cal, hold the tips about the same distance apart as they will be when measuring partsand keep your hands still. Sometimes it is valuable to check the "quality" of thenull calibration by measuring the part that was used to perform the null cal (theshorting block). If the residual error is larger than the measurement can tolerate,it may be necessary to re-do it until an acceptable calibration is achieved.Other FixturesIn general, follow the procedure for performing null cal as described above. Use aconfiguration similar to one that will be used when making measurements andkeep any random objects far away.2-17
