She has conducted internationaldevelopment work in the fields of participatory development planning,microfinance, and community governance, as well as taught legal and economicanthropology and sustainable international development. Her current researchinterests include the relationships of directed and spontaneous formalization ofAfrican landholding and natural resource tenure, and related issues of belongingand territoriality. She holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University.Jürgen Scheffran is Professor at the Institute of Geography of Hamburg Universityin Germany and head of the Research Group Climate Change and Securityin the Klima Campus Excellence Initiative. After his physics Ph.D. at MarburgUniversity he worked in the Interdisciplinary Research Group IANUS and theMathematics Department of Technical University of Darmstadt, at the PotsdamInstitute for Climate Impact Research, and as Visiting Professor at the Universityof Paris (Sorbonne). Until summer 2009 he held positions at the University ofIllinois in the Departments of Political Science and Atmospheric Sciences, theACDIS Program, and the Center for Advanced BioEnergy Research. His researchinterests include: climate change and energy security; environmental conflictand sustainability science; complex systems analysis and human-environmentinteraction; technology assessment and international security. He served asadvisor to the United Nations, the Technology Assessment Bureau of the GermanParliament, the Federal Environmental Agency, and he took part in theGerman delegation to the climate negotiations in New Delhi in 2002. Terry was Manager of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) ofthe Inter-American Development Bank for 16 years, beginning with the MIF’sinception in 1993. Before joining the MIF, Terry held a number of senior staffpositions in the United States Congress and the United States Treasury Department.He served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury from 1979 to1981, involved primarily in shaping U.S. policy toward international financialinstitutions. He was a recipient of the U.S. Treasury’s Meritorious Service Awardin 1980. From 1983 to 1993 Terry served as staff director of three different U.S.Congressional Committees: the Joint Economic Committee, the House Committeeon Small Business, and the House Committee on Banking and FinancialInstitutions.
