She holds a bachelor’s degree in Governmentfrom Smith College and is co-author of “Political Economy,” Chapter 6 inInterpreting the Middle East (Westview Press 2010, ed. David Sorenson).Daivi Rodima-Taylor is a social anthropologist whose research focuses on indigenousmutual help associations, fiduciary culture and networks of trust and reciprocity.Her research in East Africa looked at informal cooperative labor groups,rotating savings associations and vigilante councils of northwest Tanzania,exploring the rise of novel associational environments in the context of ongoingpolitical decentralization and economic liberalization. She has conducted internationaldevelopment work in the fields of participatory development planning,microfinance, and community governance, as well as taught legal and economicanthropology and sustainable international development. Her current researchinterests include the relationships of directed and spontaneous formalization ofAfrican landholding and natural resource tenure, and related issues of belongingand territoriality. She holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University.Jürgen Scheffran is Professor at the Institute of Geography of Hamburg Universityin Germany and head of the Research Group Climate Change and Securityin the Klima Campus Excellence Initiative. After his physics Ph.D. at MarburgUniversity he worked in the Interdisciplinary Research Group IANUS and theMathematics Department of Technical University of Darmstadt, at the PotsdamInstitute for Climate Impact Research, and as Visiting Professor at the Universityof Paris (Sorbonne). Until summer 2009 he held positions at the University ofIllinois in the Departments of Political Science and Atmospheric Sciences, theACDIS Program, and the Center for Advanced BioEnergy Research. His researchinterests include: climate change and energy security; environmental conflictand sustainability science; complex systems analysis and human-environmentinteraction; technology assessment and international security. He served asadvisor to the United Nations, the Technology Assessment Bureau of the GermanParliament, the Federal Environmental Agency, and he took part in theGerman delegation to the climate negotiations in New Delhi in 2002.
