Aotearoa/New Zealand<br />

Invitation:<br />

This <strong>in</strong>vitation is for you to take part <strong>in</strong> a research project about <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip, a<br />

type of <strong>leaders</strong>hip that has ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g attention <strong>in</strong> the last twenty years. This<br />

sheet is designed to answer any questions you may have before you make your<br />

decision of whether to participate.<br />

What is the purpose of this study?<br />

This project is undertaken to complete the researcher’s Master of Education degree<br />

from Auckland University of Technology. The project is also undertaken to generate<br />

knowledge about <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip as it applies <strong>in</strong> the practice of the Church<br />

Educational System (CES) <strong>in</strong> Aotearoa/New Zealand.<br />

What are the research aims?<br />

1. To describe and analyse the practice of <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip with<strong>in</strong> the CES <strong>in</strong>stitute<br />

programme <strong>in</strong> Auckland.<br />

2 To critically discuss <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip as it applies <strong>in</strong> a <strong>religious</strong> <strong>education</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

3. To def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip<br />

4. To critically analyse how the CES <strong>in</strong> Aotearoa/New Zealand is meet<strong>in</strong>g the need of<br />

generat<strong>in</strong>g and perpetuat<strong>in</strong>g local <strong>leaders</strong>hip for the LDS church and <strong>leaders</strong>hip <strong>in</strong> the<br />

secular workplace.<br />

5.To contribute to the current lack of research about the CES <strong>in</strong>stitute programme <strong>in</strong><br />

Aotearoa/New Zealand on a longitud<strong>in</strong>al scale.<br />

How will the study be carried out?<br />

Individual <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews will be conducted with two CES directors <strong>in</strong> Auckland,<br />

and the country director from Hamilton.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terview tim<strong>in</strong>g will be assigned accord<strong>in</strong>g to convenience for you. It is<br />

anticipated that the <strong>in</strong>terview will be approximately one hour <strong>in</strong> length. You will be<br />

given a copy of <strong>in</strong>terview questions prior to participation to give you time, if you<br />

wish, to th<strong>in</strong>k about the topic and to clarify any questions/concerns with the<br />

researcher before the scheduled <strong>in</strong>terview.<br />

Other data will be collected from three focus groups, each consist<strong>in</strong>g of 6-8<br />

participants tak<strong>in</strong>g place with CES teachers <strong>in</strong> July.
