Data gather<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Data gather<strong>in</strong>g took place over a six week period beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> early July 2005.<br />

Individual <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews were held with CES directors responsible for<br />

oversee<strong>in</strong>g the adm<strong>in</strong>istration of <strong>in</strong>stitute <strong>in</strong> the Tāmaki-makau-rau/Auckland region.<br />

After <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews, three focus groups were conducted with volunteer teachers.<br />

To further triangulate data, classroom observations and document analysis were used<br />

to round out data gather<strong>in</strong>g methods. All <strong>in</strong>terviews, focus groups, and observations<br />

were held <strong>in</strong> CES teach<strong>in</strong>g sites <strong>in</strong> Tāmaki-makau-rau/Auckland. Although the <strong>in</strong>itial<br />

<strong>in</strong>vitation to the Country Director was extended outside the city, the director drove to<br />

Tāmaki-makau-rau/Auckland to participate <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terview.<br />

Personal <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />

Personal <strong>in</strong>terviews were conducted with three adm<strong>in</strong>istrators from the CES<br />

responsible for oversee<strong>in</strong>g the work<strong>in</strong>gs of CES <strong>in</strong> the Tāmaki-makau-rau/Auckland<br />

region. Participants <strong>in</strong>cluded the Aotearoa/New Zealand Country Director, and two<br />

Tāmaki-makau-rau/Auckland directors. Directors opted to use a pseudonym, and will<br />

be referred to <strong>in</strong> the data analysis chapter as Director A, B, or C to help protect<br />

anonymity <strong>in</strong> answers. Question schedules were distributed two days prior to<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews for directors to have time to th<strong>in</strong>k about the topic of <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip and<br />

their answers. A meet<strong>in</strong>g was held with the three directors as a group to clarify the<br />

aims of the study and to answer any questions prior to beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>terviews. As<br />

the study also <strong>in</strong>volves volunteer teachers whom the directors oversee, a focus group<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g schedule was also devised <strong>in</strong> this meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Interviews were scheduled to go no more than one hour. No one <strong>in</strong>terview went for<br />

more than this time, the average duration be<strong>in</strong>g approximately forty m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />

Interviews were conducted consecutively on the same day with tape-record<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> method of collect<strong>in</strong>g the data with m<strong>in</strong>imal note tak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
