The central research question was formed from extended ponder<strong>in</strong>g upon a range of<br />

sub-questions:<br />

• What are the goals of the CES <strong>in</strong> regard to the development of <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>?<br />

• How do CES volunteer teachers and directors understand <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip?<br />

• What are the feel<strong>in</strong>gs of CES volunteer teachers and directors about their<br />

experience of <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip <strong>in</strong> the CES?<br />

• How do CES volunteer teachers and directors apply their understand<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip <strong>in</strong> and out of the CES context?<br />

• To what extent does the Aotearoa/New Zealand context affect the<br />

development of <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong> <strong>in</strong> the CES?<br />

Research aims<br />

The research aims of this thesis are drawn from the research questions raised above.<br />

Draw<strong>in</strong>g from my experience as a student <strong>in</strong> the CES <strong>in</strong> Aotearoa/New Zealand, I<br />

wanted to explore the experience of <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip as it was practiced <strong>in</strong> the lives<br />

of those who could provide an organisational perspective of the CES, i.e. directors<br />

and volunteer teachers. This said, the aims of this study are:<br />

1. To describe and analyse the practice of <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip with<strong>in</strong> the CES <strong>in</strong>stitute<br />

programme <strong>in</strong> Tāmaki-makau-rau/Auckland.<br />

2 To critically discuss <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip as it applies <strong>in</strong> a <strong>religious</strong> <strong>education</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

3. To def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>servant</strong> <strong>leaders</strong>hip.<br />

4. To critically analyse how the CES <strong>in</strong> Aotearoa/New Zealand is meet<strong>in</strong>g the need of<br />

generat<strong>in</strong>g and perpetuat<strong>in</strong>g local <strong>leaders</strong>hip for the LDS church and <strong>leaders</strong>hip <strong>in</strong> the<br />

secular workplace.<br />

5.To contribute to the current lack of research about the CES Institute programme <strong>in</strong><br />

Aotearoa/New Zealand.<br />
