A frequency translator shifts theuplink frequencies to a different set of downlink frequencies so that someseparation exists between the frequency bands in order to prevent unwantedfeedback or ringaround, from the downlink antenna into the receiving earthstation. In designs where frequency translators are not used, a high isolationbetween the output and input will be necessary. A typical isolation requirementfor a communication system is 27 dB for circular polarization and 33 dB forlinear polarization. A frequency translator can be represented by the arrangementin Fig. 2.25.A frequency translator is comprised of a mixer and an oscillator. A mixercombines the incoming signal f c with the local oscillator frequency f l prior tobeing amplified. The mixing process (called heterodyne, or heterodyning inshort) produces frequencies to the sum and difference of f c and f l .
