3Earth StationsIn Chap. 2 we discuss the basic structure of a satellite system. We nowconsider a vital part of the overall satellite system: earth stations. An earthstation is a collection of equipment for communicating with the satellite,regardless of whether it is fixed, mobile, aeronautical, or marine terminals. Anearth station provides a means of transmitting the modulated RF carrier to thesatellite within the uplink frequency spectrum and receiving the RF carrierfrom the satellite with the downlink frequency spectrum. It is the vital linkbetween satellites and communications users.This chapter considers a basic arrangement of an earth station, thetechnical and operational requirements, the different types of earth stationsused for day-to-day communications, the switching technique employed, thesystem capacity requirements, and the interface with terrestrial equipment andusers.Copyright © 2002 by Marcel Dekker, Inc.
