5Communication Networks andSystemsCommunication involves the transfer of information between a source and auser. Many sources may attempt to transfer information through one satellitetransponder with the result that the available communication capacity of thetransponder is shared among several earth terminals. This sharing technique iscalled multiple access (MA). The term access, in satellite transmissionsystems, usually refers to multiple access. Sharing can be in many formats,such as sharing the transponder bandwidth in separate frequency slots(FDMA), sharing the transponder availability in time slots (TDMA), orallowing coded signals to overlap in time and frequency (CDMA). Thesymbol ‘‘D’’ in the acronym stands for ‘‘division.’’ Division implies switching.The various transmission switching techniques are discussed in much detail inthis chapter.Copyright © 2002 by Marcel Dekker, Inc.
