8Mobile Satellite System Services8.1 OVERVIEWUntil the introduction of international maritime satellite communicationssystems (INMARSAT) to serve ships at sea, all satellite communicationlinks were between fixed locations. The introduction of maritime servicesserved to focus attention on the whole field of mobile communications andopened up a range of novel opportunities. These include1. Standardization of system solutions; the most successful standardizedsystems is the Global System for Mobile Communications(GSM). The GSM architecture is based on terrestrial switchednetwork.2.
