6Error Detection and CorrectionCoding SchemesCoding techniques are used for several reasons: reduction of dc wandering, suppression of intersymbol interference, and self-clocking capability. Theseproblems are of engineering interest in the transmission of digital data. Thecoding schemes discussed in this chapter are for error detection and correction, specifically forward error correction (FEC) techniques. FEC codes may bedivided into two classes of codes, namely, linear block codes and convolutionalcodes [1]. Depending on the intended use of codes, FEC enables thereceiver not only to detect errors but also to facilitate their correction. To enhance the reader’s understanding of the subject matter, we brieflyintroduce the principle of channel coding, followed by coding and decodingschemes. This arrangement enables the reader to move on to concreterealizations without great difficulty.Copyright © 2002 by Marcel Dekker, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
