The selection ofvarieties, propagation, planting, fertilization andmanagement. Field trips required.HORT 4035. TROPICAL FRUITS CULTUREII. Three credit hours. Two hours of lecture andone three-hour laboratory per week.Prerequisite: PLSC 3005.Study of the origin, botany, varieties andproduction practices of tropical fruits witheconomic potential in Puerto Rico, such as:papaya, mango, soursop, and passion fruit.HORT 4037. PRINCIPLES OF FRUIT ANDVEGETABLE PRESERVATION. Three credithours. Two hours of lecture and one three-hourlaboratory per week. Prerequisite: CHEM 3002.The common commercial methods of preservingfruits and vegetables. Fundamental principles offood spoilage, decomposition and changes,methods employed in preserving fruits andvegetables; freezing, canning and dehydration.Field trips required.HORT 4045. STARCHY CROPS. Four credithours. Three hours of lecture and one three-hourlaboratory per week. Prerequisite: PLSC 3005.Management and production of starchy cropslike plantains, bananas, yams, taniers, sweetpotatoes, cassava, taro, root celery, and otherswith economic potential in Puerto Rico. Specialattention will be given to the origin, economicsituation and perspectives, botanic classification,climatic requisites, crop improvement,propagation, cultural practices, pest and diseasecontrol, harvesting, storage, processing,distribution, and marketing.HORT 4995. SUPERVISED PROFESSIONALOCCUPATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR COOPSTUDENTS. Three to six credit hours. Amaximum of two practice period, one of whichhas to be in a semester. Prerequisites: Consentof the Director of the Department and to be aCoop student.Practical experience in Horticulture incooperation with the private sector orgovernment. To be jointly supervised by theacademic department, the Coop programcoordinator, and an official from the cooperatingentity. A written report will be required uponcompletion of each work period.HORT 4996. SELECTED TOPICS. One to sixcredit hour. One to six hours of lecture.Prerequisites: junior or senior standing andconsent of the Director of the Department.Selected topics in ornamentals, starch and tubers,vegetables, fruits, tissue culture and other relatedareas.ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATEAND GRADUATE COURSESHORT 5005. ADVANCED FLORICULTURE.Three credit hours. Two hours of lecture andone three-hour laboratory per week.Prerequisite: HORT 4025.A comprehensive review of scientific literatureand research on the ecology, physiology,propagation, improvement, and other growthprocesses of important flowering and foliageplants.HORT 5006. ADVANCED VEGETABLEGARDENING. Two credit hours. One hour oflecture and one three-hour laboratory per week.Prerequisite: HORT 4008.This course aims to review the different phasesof experimental work in vegetable growing withassigned field problems.
