GENERAL INFORMATION Undergraduate Bulletin of Information 2001-2002Campus has several research and developmentinstitutes which provide valuable support forresearch activities. The Agricultural Experiment Station, originally established in 1910 by the SugarProducers Association, was ceded to theGovernment of Puerto Rico in 1913 andtransferred to the University of Puerto Rico bylegislative action in 1933. Its main objective isto conduct research and to develop technology toimprove agriculture and the quality of life inrural areas. The Station, a component of theCollege of Agricultural Sciences, has tworesearch centers at Mayagüez and Río Piedrasand six agricultural substations located atAdjuntas, Corozal, Juana Díaz, Gurabo, Isabela, and Lajas. The Rum Pilot Plant and the FoodTechnology Laboratory are two agroindustrialunits of the Experiment Station located at the RíoPiedras Center. The Station staff, laboratories, aspecialized research library, farms, and otherfacilities are available to graduate students forthesis research. The Station is an active memberof the Southern Association of ExperimentStation. This Association serves as a regionallink to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, theNational Association of State Universities andLand Grant Colleges (NASULGC), and the U. S.Congress.The Bio-Optical Oceanography Laboratory(BIOL) of the University of Puerto Rico atMayagüez, Department of Marine Sciences, hasan active teaching and research program in wateroptics and satellite remote sensing.Interdisciplinary studies of coastal and oceanicwaters of the Intra-Americas sea include: (1)variability of inherent and apparent water opticalproperties, (2) effects of ultraviolet radiation ontropical marine organisms and on public health,(3) satellite data validation and algorithmdevelopment, and (4) estimation of oceanicprimary production. The Center for Applied Social Research is anintegral part of the Department of SocialSciences. CISA promotes and coordinatespractical applications of faculty expertise for theanalysis and mitigation of problems arising fromor inextricably linked to social behavior andissues. The Center for Computing Research andDevelopment (CECORD) was established tosupport the research activities of the NationalScience Foundation grant entitled Developmentof a Computer Engineering ResearchEnvironment at UPR-Mayagüez. The majorgoals of this grant are to develop the researchenvironment needed to start a Ph.D. program incomputer engineering and computer science andto increase minority participation in graduateschool programs and research. The Center wasconceived as an organization supported byresearch grants. Currently, the National ScienceFoundation, the Economic DevelopmentAdministration of Puerto Rico, and theUniversity of Puerto Rico fund it.The Center for Hemispheric Cooperation inResearch and Education in Engineering andApplied Science (CoHemis) is part of theUniversity of Puerto Rico. It is housed in andprimarily serves the Mayagüez Campus.CoHemis was founded in 1991 at a hemisphericconference-workshop sponsored by the NationalScience Foundation. It brought together nationalscience and technology organization (ONCyT)delegates from 13 countries of the Americas todiscuss ways to increase hemisphericcollaborations in science and technology.CoHemis maintains relationships with most ofthe hemisphere's ONCyT members throughofficially designated liaisons.CoHemis publishes a free quarterly newsletter inEnglish and Spanish distributed to persons andentities from Canada to Chile who are interestedin science and technology (S&T) collaborationsin such basic fields as energy, manufacturing, environment and natural resources, manufacturing, and infrastructure. Thispublication, CoHemis, reaches U. S.Congressional committees and educational andgovernment R&D institutions as well as keymembers of the Latin American S&Tcommunity. The Center Research InstrumentationLaboratory (CRIL), founded in 1982 in theDepartment of Chemistry, has sophisticatedinstrumentation for inorganic, organic andenvironmental analysis. The staff includes adirector and two instrumentation assistants.Available instrumentation include a 500 MHzBruker and 300 MHz Varian NMR, a System2000 FT-IR coupled to a Gas Chromatographand equipped with near and mid IR detectors, aHewlett Packard Gas Chromatography/MassSpectrometry system, a Perkin Elmer and Varian9
