OTHER SERVICES Undergraduate Bulletin of Information 2001-2002composed of representatives from the differentcolleges elected by the student body and givesstudents the opportunity to present their opinionsand views to the University administration.Additional information regarding the Counciland its functions may be obtained at the GeneralStudent Council Office located on the first floorof the Student Center.STUDENT ORGANIZATIONSAND CLUBSThe University has over 100 recognized studentorganizations and clubs which serve the variousneeds and interests of students. Theseorganizations range from campus branches ofnational organizations to local clubs and specialinterest groups. They provide an opportunity forinvolvement in student activities, and communityservice and for leadership and personaldevelopment. For further information, studentsshould contact the Department of Social andCultural Activities.STUDENT CENTERThe Student Center constitutes the Universitycommunity center and is open to students,faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors. It is a focalpoint for cultural, social, and recreationalactivities and provides study areas for students.A number of departments under the Office of theDean of Students are located in the Center.These are the offices of Counseling andGuidance, Off-Campus Housing, Placement,Social and Cultural Activities, and the StudentExchange Program and International StudentServices.Other areas within the Center are the AlumniOffice, the General Student Council Office, theGraphic Arts Workshop, and an art exhibitionsroom. There is a game room for playing tabletennis, pool, chess, and other recreational games.The Student Center also houses the campuscafeteria, campus bookstore, post office, and ahair styling salon. A Student Aid Center, locatedon the ground floor, provides low costspecialized services, such as photocopying,photographic film development, and fax services.OTHER SERVICESCAMPUS COMPUTER CENTERThe Campus Computer Center is part of theChancellor’s Office. It is located on the firstfloor of the Luis Monzón Building. It operates24 hours a day, year-round, with 18 hours dailyunder operator assistance. The Center alsooperates a computing room in the BusinessAdministration Building. The Center serves theacademic community in both instruction andresearch, as well as the Campus Administration.The principal academic computer facilityconsists of a Digital ALPHA server DS 20computer with 512MB of main memory and72.8GB of disk storage. An ALPHA 2100 5/250is the exclusive system for library automationAny user on campus and from other institutionscan access the on-line catalog by using aterminal or a personal computer attached to thenetwork. An ALPHA 8250 operates theAdministrative Information Systems and studentservices. This ALPHA system has 1GB inmemory and 49.5GB of disk storage.Each system operates on a time-sharing basis andis capable of handling more than 200 concurrentusers. There are more than 600 terminalsaccessing the systems and more than 1,500personal computers around campus.The Center also operates a computing room inthe Business Administration Building.Computer Center Services include the use of dataprocessing equipment (i.e., terminals andmicrocomputers), document printing, software,and consulting. These rooms are available to allstudents and academic personnel. Most of thedepartments have additional computer facilitieswhich vary from personal computers tominicomputers and workstations.The ALPHA computers and most of theworkstations on campus are connected to theinstitutional network RUMNET (RecintoUniversitario de Mayagüez Network). Alsomany departments have their own local areanetwork connected to RUMNET.RUMNET is part of the wide area network of theUniversity of Puerto Rico (UPRENET) whichconnects the campuses and other University45
