Prerequisite: SPAN 3212.Lectures with textual analysis of the Spanish-American short story, from its beginnings in the19th Century until the present. Prerequisite: SPAN 3102.Critical study of poetic expression in PuertoRico. Discussion and analysis of texts whichexemplify diverse stages, aesthetic concerns, andmovements in Puerto Rican Poetry, from itsorigins to the present.SPAN 4201. INTRODUCTION TOLINGUISTICS I. Three credit hours. Threehours of lecture per week. Prerequisite: SPAN3102.Introduction to linguistic theory with specialattention to the Spanish language. Main topicsinclude: the nature of language; the relationshipbetween human language and communication;the history of linguistic studies up to thebeginning of the 20th century; 20th centuryschools that have concentrated on the study ofmorphology, syntax or both.SPAN 4202. INTRODUCTION TOLINGUISTICS II. Three credit hours. Threehours of lecture per week. Prerequisite: SPAN3102.Introduction to linguistic theory with specialattention to the Spanish language. Main topicsinclude: 20th century schools that haveconcentrated on the study of phonology andsemantics, the relationship between language andsociety, linguistic change, and languageacquisition.SPAN 4221-4222. THE GOLDEN AGE. Threecredit hours per semester. Three hours of lectureper week each semester. Prerequisite: SPAN3212.The Spanish Renaissance, Humanism, Reformationand Counter Reformation, Mysticism andAsceticism; study of lyric and epic poetry, novel,prose, writings and the drama previous to Lope deVega: Cervante's novel and Lope de Vega'sdramas; Calderón, Tirso de Molina, etc. Lectures,reports, analysis of main works.SPAN 4405. TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFICWRITING. Three credit hours. Three hours oflecture per week. Prerequisite: SPAN 3102 andeighteen (18) credits in major specialty.Strategies for the production of professionaldocuments for referential objectives; practice inthe writing of technical and scientific reports,letters, proposals, and papers.SPAN 4491-4492. SEMINAR. One credit hourper semester. One hour of lecture per week persemester.This course will train the student in preparing andclassifying a bibliography, and will give him or heran introduction to methods and problems ofresearch and literary criticism. Required of allstudents majoring in Hispanic Studies.SPAN 4995. SPECIAL TOPICS I. One to threecredit hours. One to three hours of lecture perweek.
